The Nigerian Navy has unveiled a 326 member elite Marine Force tasked with protecting an estimated $16.6 billion in offshore oil and gas investments, in what authorities described as a strategic recalibration of the nation’s maritime security architecture.

The Special Operations-capable unit, drawn from rigorously selected personnel, is designed to secure critical assets across the Niger Delta’s volatile waterways, while reinforcing internal security operations in riverine and hinterland communities.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oloyede, described the emergence of the Marine Force as a defining moment for Nigeria’s defence framework, declaring that the country’s maritime domain can no longer be left vulnerable to evolving security threats.

He cautioned the newly inducted marines that the battles ahead would be complex and unconventional, requiring not only physical strength but intellectual agility and tactical innovation in confronting adaptive adversaries.

According to him, the operatives had undergone intensive physical conditioning, mental resilience drills and advanced tactical exercises aligned with Special Forces Tier 2 standards, preparing them for high-risk, multi-domain engagements.

Oloyede stressed that Nigeria’s strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors makes the protection of offshore energy infrastructure not just a national priority but an economic imperative.

He further underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration, urging seamless cooperation between the Navy, other security services, maritime regulators and coastal communities to consolidate gains and restore public confidence in maritime governance.

Providing operational background, the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, disclosed that the Nigerian Navy Marines was formally established on June 1, 2025, with the pioneer batch commencing training on August 14, 2025, culminating in six months of intensive Special Operations Tier 2 drills.

In his remarks, the Commandant of the Nigerian Navy Marines Training Centre, Olayinka Aliyu, said the force was conceptualised as a combat-ready unit capable of operating seamlessly across maritime, riverine, littoral and inland terrains.

He explained that the training curriculum covered endurance drills, amphibious manoeuvres, precision marksmanship, close-quarters battle, survival techniques and small-team tactics, including land and jungle warfare exercises conducted in Ogun State, measures aimed at producing physically robust, tactically versatile and mentally resilient marines ready to safeguard Nigeria’s offshore wealth.
