    The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, has taken proactive steps to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process in Kogi State in preparation for the forthcoming off-cycle gubernatorial elections on November 11, 2023.

    The IGP’s commitment to a peaceful electoral environment was evident as he convened a significant meeting with key stakeholders in Kogi State, bringing together various segments of society, including political leaders, representatives of political parties, civil society organizations, electoral officials, traditional and religious leaders, youth leaders, and security agencies. 

    The primary objective of this gathering was to foster constructive dialogue, share vital information, and collectively strategize on measures to ensure a free, fair, credible, and peaceful electoral process in the state.

    During the meeting, the IGP called upon political leaders to play a pivotal role in preserving the peace by advocating for a culture of non-violence among their supporters. He emphasized the importance of conducting the electoral process without any form of intimidation or coercion.

    In response to a video circulating on social media that alleged an armed attack on the residence of a key party official in Anyigba, the IGP ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation. The investigation aims to ascertain all parties involved, their respective levels of involvement, and ensure justice prevails.

    The IGP stressed the Force’s commitment to impartiality and neutrality throughout the electoral process and issued a stern warning to candidates and their followers against any form of misconduct or violence during the electioneering process. Decisive action will be taken against any individual found fomenting trouble.

    The engagement with stakeholders and the commitment to a peaceful election underscore the importance of ensuring that the electoral process in Kogi State proceeds without disruptions, violence, or malpractice.

    In anticipation of the forthcoming off-cycle Gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, scheduled for November 11, 2023, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM, has taken proactive measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. 

    The IGP has ordered the distribution of an additional 220 operational vehicles, which include water cannons, Armored Personnel Carriers, helmets, bulletproof vests, tear gas canisters, and other essential logistics to the three affected states. These resources are intended to bolster security arrangements for the elections.

    Prior to this, the Inspector-General of Police had organized specialized training sessions for police officers who will be responsible for security management during the forthcoming elections.

    He also sought the approval of the Federal Government for the payment of allowances and the provision of necessary support to enhance the morale of the officers during their operations.

    IGP Egbetokun has issued a stern warning to all stakeholders in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States to prioritize peace, uphold the rule of law, and exhibit law-abiding behavior throughout the election process.

    He emphasizes that the Police and other security agencies have been put on high alert to prevent any unruly acts that could disrupt the elections in any of the three states.

    These proactive measures and warnings from the Inspector-General of Police are aimed at ensuring that the off-cycle Gubernatorial elections proceed smoothly, peacefully, and in compliance with the rule of law.

    TMG Addresses Concerns For Upcoming Off-Cycle Elections In Imo, Kogi, Bayelsa States

    In a significant press conference held at the CISLAC Conference Room in Abuja, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) highlighted various concerns and issues surrounding the impending off-cycle elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states, scheduled for November 11, 2023.

    TMG expressed grave concerns about the prevailing insecurity in the three states. Reports from partner organizations, including the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room and Kimpact Development Initiative, have raised red flags over rampant violence in several local government areas.

    TMG emphasized the necessity for peaceful elections and urged security agencies to ensure a secure atmosphere for voters.

    Of significant concern was an alleged memo circulating from the Imo state government, reserving every hotel room in Owerri for the election period. This has led to speculation that domestic and foreign observers are being effectively barred from entering the state.

    TMG called for the immediate clarification of these allegations, highlighting the detrimental impact such actions can have on the democratic process.

    The disqualification and subsequent reinstatement of the APC candidate in Bayelsa have created ambiguity.

    TMG questioned whether this information has been effectively communicated to the public to prevent further unrest and confusion in the state.

    TMG raised concerns regarding a surprising ₦18 billion supplementary budget allocated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the off-cycle elections. Given that INEC had assured funding availability for these elections, TMG called for transparency and detailed explanations from the federal government to alleviate suspicions of potential malpractices.

    TMG underscored the importance of INEC’s independence in determining election results, advocating for a transparent electoral process that minimizes reliance on the judiciary.

    Inconsistencies in election tribunal rulings, such as the discovery of unsigned ballot papers, have shaken public trust in the electoral and judicial processes.

    TMG warned against a similar situation in the upcoming elections and urged all political actors to uphold the rule of law.

    TMG criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling that allows manual collation of results, stating that this could create opportunities for result falsification. They called on INEC to enhance its use of technology for credible elections.

    TMG decried the political impasse in Rivers State, urging federal intervention to safeguard democracy from further erosion.

    TMG expressed concerns over the partisan appointment of Resident Electoral Commissioners and called for appointments based on neutrality and merit.

    TMG admonished political parties for neglecting their role in providing civic education to the electorate and urged them to prioritize clean and citizen-oriented campaigns.

    TMG revealed plans to deploy observers to all local government areas, highlighting the essential role citizens play in ensuring a free, fair, transparent, and credible election.

    TMG encouraged citizens to actively participate in the electoral process, emphasizing that their involvement reduces opportunities for electoral malpractice and bolsters the integrity of the elections.
