In a proactive move to secure its Area of Operation from criminal activities, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, stationed at the Naval Base in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, conducted a successful raid on a suspected sea robbers’ camp in Southern Ijaw on November 10, 2023.

The operation, part of ongoing efforts to eradicate criminality, illegalities, and the possession of illicit weapons within Nigeria’s maritime environment, saw NNS SOROH deploying its anti-sea robbery patrol team swiftly based on credible information received. The targeted raid occurred at 2 am, with the naval patrol team from Naval Security Station (NSS 030) at Foropa community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area playing a pivotal role.

Upon the arrival of the Nigerian Navy patrol team, the suspected sea robbers fled into the bushes, evading apprehension. However, a thorough cordon and search operation by the NNS SOROH’s special anti-sea robbery team yielded significant results. Recovered items included a general-purpose machine gun (GPMG) with 100 links, 2 AK 47 rifles, one locally made long gun, 2 Tavor magazines, 11 rounds of 7.62 (NATO), 2 Cartridge rounds of a pump-action gun, 2 Yamaha 200HP engines, 5 Baofeng radios, assorted camouflage uniforms, and various mobile phones.

The camp, identified as a hub for criminal activities, was subsequently deactivated to eliminate any potential shelter for criminals in the area.

The success of the raid operation was attributed to the resilience and dedication of NNS SOROH, reflecting the commitment of the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, the Chief of the Naval Staff. The Navy vows to continue conducting such sting operations to prevent criminals from undermining the democratic process, disrupting public peace, or breaching hard-earned maritime security during and after off-cycle election periods.

The Nigerian Navy emphasizes its commitment to cooperating with stakeholders to maintain a peaceful maritime environment crucial for legitimate business activities, contributing to national economic development and prosperity.

Media outlets are urged to disseminate this information to raise awareness of the Navy’s ongoing efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
