The Defence Headquarters, officially launched Operation EMBER GUARD, a special security operation aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring safety across the South West region of Nigeria.
The operation was launched at the Headquarters Operation AWATSE, Apapa, Lagos, by the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force South West Operations AWATSE, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha GSS.
Speaking during a short media briefing at the launch, Rear Admiral Mustapha stated that Operation EMBER GUARD is a Defence Headquarters–led operation designed to repel criminal illegalities within the South West region, particularly during the festive and post-festive period. He noted that the operation would run from 23 December 2025 to 15 January 2026

According to the Theatre Commander, the operation is part of proactive measures by the Armed Forces of Nigeria to enhance internal security, protect critical national assets, and ensure the safety of lives and property during the Yuletide season. He emphasized that the period often witnesses increased movement of people and heightened criminal activities, necessitating a robust security posture.
Rear Admiral Mustapha further explained that the operation would involve coordinated efforts of troops drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, and other relevant security agencies operating within the Joint Task Force framework. He assured members of the public that the Armed Forces remain committed to professionalism and adherence to rules of engagement while carrying out their duties.
The Theatre Commander also called on residents of the South West region to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid the success of the operation.
Operation EMBER GUARD underscores the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to sustaining peace, stability, and security across the country, particularly during periods of increased socio-economic activities.
