    Governor Soludo Praised For Transparent Contract Termination, Commitment To Public Good

    The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) Anambra State Branch has commended Governor Charles Soludo for his recent impromptu visits to ongoing projects in the state.

    The Governor’s on-the-spot assessment and verification of the projects’ progress and citizen feedback demonstrate his commitment to improved service delivery and sustainable development.

    In a press statement titled “Public Funds Must Be Used for Public Good,” Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman of CLO, and Comrade Chidi Mbah, Secretary, welcomed the Governor’s actions as a step in the right direction.

    They believe that such initiatives will accelerate savings and ensure the prudent management of the state’s resources, ultimately benefiting the welfare and wellbeing of the citizens.

    Earlier, the CLO expressed concerns over the poor execution of certain projects, including those on Niger Street and various road constructions.

    However, the recent visit by His Excellency, Governor Charles Soludo, brought to light issues of negligence, lack of capacity, and failure to adhere to agreed timelines by the contractor, TEC Engineering LTD.

    In response to these findings, the Governor made the courageous decision to terminate the contract, setting a transparent precedent for judiciously using public funds for the public good.

    The termination of the contract has rekindled the people’s confidence, trust, and hope in Governor Soludo’s administration.

    It signals to other contractors that business as usual will no longer be tolerated, as public funds must be utilized in the best interest of the citizens.

    Governor Charles Soludo’s commitment to continuous improvement and reform is evident, and the CLO urges him to sustain these impromptu visits to various government projects, agencies, schools, markets, hospitals, and parks. By doing so, he can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the state and take necessary actions for urgent transformation.

    Furthermore, the CLO suggests that the Governor establishes a Projects Implementations Monitoring and Verification Committee.

    Following the directives of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, traders, and commercial banks in Anambra State have decided to disregard the illegal sit-at-home order issued by non-state actors.

    As a result, Anambra State remains vibrant, with bustling activities everywhere.

    A few days ago, Governor Soludo held meetings with various stakeholders in the state, including market people and commercial bank managers, urging them to ignore the unlawful sit-at-home order imposed by some unscrupulous individuals.

    The traders and banks in Anambra State wholeheartedly complied with the governor’s directives and have reopened their shops and businesses, operating without any hindrance.

    Notably, Onitsha’s main market, one of the largest commercial centers in the state, was teeming with activity, with people going about their daily engagements freely.

    The routine operations of commercial buses and tricycles proceeded without any fear of anticipated trouble.

    Similarly, at the Nkwo Nnewi motorcycle spare parts market, containers and trucks owners were busy unloading goods and transporting them to respective shops and warehouses.

    In other key cities such as Ekwulobia and Eke Awka markets, business activities were in full swing, and banks were open for customers to conduct their transactions without any fear of molestation or intimidation.

    Governor Soludo’s directive to shun the illegal sit-at-home order has been fully embraced by the people of Anambra State.

    He had previously emphasized the negative socioeconomic effects of the sit-at-home order, urging all ndi Anambra to completely reject it.

    Reports from across the state show that the people are relieved and grateful for the governor’s bold actions in curbing these illegal sit-at-home orders.

    One trader, Mrs. Ann Okoye, expressed her weariness with the sit-at-home order, noting that it has caused them to lose patronage to neighboring markets in Delta State, such as Asaba market.

    Overall, the people of Anambra State are appreciative of Governor Soludo’s efforts in putting an end to the disruptive sit-at-home orders and allowing them to go about their lawful activities without fear.

    The Solution Innovation District, situated at De Destination Hub in Awka, has been officially inaugurated by Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

    Designed as a comprehensive resource for the youth, the Innovation District will serve as a one-stop center for services and innovation.

    During the commissioning ceremony, Governor Soludo extended his congratulations to the 20,000 Anambra youths who recently completed the initial training program of the Solution Innovation District. These young individuals have acquired various digital skills through online learning.

    The Governor expressed gratitude to Microsoft and the Wootlab Foundation for their partnership with the state government, which played a crucial role in bringing this visionary project to life.

    He also disclosed that the present Government House will eventually transform into the permanent site for the Solution Innovation District, once he relocates to the ongoing new government house presently under construction.

    During the second quarter of 2023, the group saw a remarkable 63% increase in pre-tax profits, reaching an impressive N92.52 billion.

    This substantial growth in profits also contributed to a 38% rise in half-year profit before tax, amounting to N150.31 billion compared to N108.96 billion in the same period the previous year, according to the financial statement.

    The quarter’s financials showcased substantial improvements in key areas. Interest income surged to N238.67 billion, a significant increase from N161.09 billion in the corresponding quarter of 2022.

    Also, fees and commission income experienced a solid 25% gain, reaching N71.01 billion compared to N56.73 billion recorded in the same period last year.

    Another indicator of Ecobank Group’s success was the substantial increase in customer deposits for the half-year ending on June 30, 2023.

    The deposits rose to N14.71 trillion, showcasing significant growth from N9.60 trillion recorded as of December 31, 2022.

    Police Neutralize Kidnapper, Rescue Victim, Apprehend Notorious Gang, Recover Vehicle

    On July 29, 2023, during a police patrol team attached to Ebrumede Police Station at Fupre junction in Effurun, a suspected kidnapper met his end while attempting to escape.

    During a routine stop and search, the officers flagged down a Lexus car, and its occupants immediately jumped out, with one of them brandishing a double-barrel gun.

    A chase ensued, resulting in the neutralization of the suspect carrying the firearm.

    While searching the vehicle, the police found a kidnapped victim, who was blindfolded.

    The victim narrated that he was kidnapped by the suspects on the same date along Jakpa Road in Effurun, Uvwie LGA.

    Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the kidnapping.

    In another successful operation, acting on credible intelligence, the DPO Owvian Aladja Division led a surveillance team to a scrap yard in Ekpan on July 28, 2023, resulting in the arrest of the gang leader, Ojokor Jeffrey, aged 22, who had been terrorizing the Warri–Sapelle Road.

    Further interrogation of the suspect led to the arrest of several other gang members.

    Among those apprehended were Musa Amadu (27), Abu Mohammed (30), Mohammed Saidu (23), Anas Idris (20), Abubakra Muktar (23), and Kamilu Alasa (21).

    The police recovered two locally made double-barrel guns and eleven live cartridges from the gang. An ongoing investigation is expected to bring to light more details about their criminal activities.

    On July 30, 2023, the Delta State Police Command received a distress call from Ondo State, alerting them that a stolen Toyota Hilux was suspected to be in Delta State.

    With relevant information in hand, the CP immediately deployed the CP-Decoy squad to conduct an intelligence-led investigation.

    After trailing the vehicle to Patani, the DPO Patani was alerted, and a police patrol team successfully recovered the stolen vehicle with registration number OD 231 A10.

    Two suspects, Tochukwu Nnamani (22) and Chukwuma Unue (38), both from Rivers State, were arrested.

    Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle belonged to the Ondo State Government but was taken from its location in Owo town. The case will be transferred to the Ondo State Police Command for further action.

    In the same vein, following the appointment of a new DPO to Ekpan Division and with a directive from the Delta State CP, Wale Abass, to tackle crime in the area, a stakeholders’ meeting was held with residents.

    During the meeting, the DPO urged those in possession of illegal firearms to surrender their weapons voluntarily.

    Responding to this call, some residents of Ekpan came forward and surrendered several arms, including a G-3 rifle, one SMG rifle, four English pump-action guns, two locally made guns, and two locally fabricated pistols.

    The DPO promptly mobilized his team, leading to the successful recovery of the surrendered weapons. Efforts to ensure the complete sanitization of Ekpan community and its surroundings continue.

    These incidents highlight the dedication and bravery of the Delta State Police in their efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents.

    The public is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing vital information to curb criminal activities in the state.

    NIMASA Assumes Control Of Continental Shipyard With Innovative Modular Floating Dock

    The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has officially taken control of the designated areas at the Continental Shipyard, which were previously leased to it by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). These areas are vital for the operations of the Modular Floating Dock.

    The transferred areas encompass various essential facilities, including the dolphin jetty, the adjacent waterfront of the jetty, a prominent administrative block, as well as a construction, welding, and mechanical workshop, along with a civil maintenance workshop, among other spaces.

    In a significant handover ceremony, the Director General of NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh stated that this event signifies the concluding phase of the Agency’s endeavor to establish and deploy the Modular Floating Dockyard. Although Dr. Jamoh was unable to attend the ceremony in person, he was well represented by Mr. Kabiru Diso, the Head of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit.

    During the handover, Mr. Diso reassured all stakeholders that the deployment of the Modular Floating Dockyard is now imminent, as all outstanding matters and uncertainties between NIMASA and the NPA have been resolved.

    “The Modular Floating Dockyard is a national asset and now that all grey areas between the NPA and NIMASA have been addressed, we are very close to the deployment of the Modular Floating Dock.

    Our goal is to domicile dry-docking of vessels in the country thus saving the nation foreign exchange currently expended on dry-docking vessels outside the shores of Nigeria. The floating Dock will also provide both direct and indirect employment to Nigerians with a multiplier effect on capacity development.” He said.

    The Infrastructure Concession and Regulatory Commission, ICRC, granted a certificate of compliance to the Outline Business Case (OBC) for the operation of a Modular Floating Dock.

    The ICRC praised the project as both bankable and sustainable. The dock is designed to handle vessels weighing up to 10,000 Metric Tons and will be operated through a Public Private Partnership agreement.

    The people of Ondo State can trust me for greater attention to developmental of education, free education to the university level by subsidizing the payment, 240 improved primary health care in 18 LGAs, job creation and opportunities in all sectors, infrastructural development, making of over 350,000 entrepreneurs”

    “My government would also create the Ondo State Investment Fund for young entrepreneurs, develop projects for market women and traders, upgrade the transport sector in the state that will create over 30,000 jobs, create friendly environment for investors, granting 100 percent financial autonomy for Osopadec, provision of houses in the three (3) senatorial district and create about 500,000 jobs in 4 years”, he added.

    “I would engage with industry and institutional players to design the implementation of the proposed reforms, to entrench the rule of law, aggressively fight corruption, while we are focused on cost reduction and streamlining of government operations for efficiency and effectiveness, we will ensure that the implementation of the reforms is pursued in a way that protects the livelihood of our hardworking and efficient civil servants.

    “My government will pursue robust and aggressive reforms of our security agencies with a view to improving their synergy and functional effectiveness. For instance, the local policing and vigilante will be promptly pursued with detailed guidelines.

    “My government will pursue aggressive digitization of all judiciary, government, and regulatory agencies to curb corruption and improve governance outcomes and service delivery.
    We will drive good and effective governance to create a culture that influences the bureaucracy of government to support the private sector. We will instil a culture of full implementation of government policies and plans to incentivise the private sector and prevent activities that curtail the development of society.

    “My government will reactivate and digitalise this allimportant institution to drive responsible and accountable public financial management in governance.

    “My government will expand Ondo’s tax base. The tax system and database will be harmonised in the State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS). The populace will be educated and oriented towards perceiving paying taxes as a contribution to the development of the state.
