Newly confirmed Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has pledged to lead a versatile, disciplined, and lethal Nigerian Air Force (NAF) capable of keeping insurgents “running without time to think or plan.” According to him “I use the word lethal in a professional sense,” he explained, “because a man running from you will not have the time to plan to hurt you.”

He further noted that his leadership vision is anchored on training, technology, safety, and strategic innovation, emphasising that “true military power is not measured by brute force but by superior intellect and adaptability.”

The assurance was contained in a statement issued by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, on behalf of AVM Aneke.

Speaking with resolve during his confirmation before the National Assembly, on 29 October 2025, the new CAS vowed to build an Air Force that responds swiftly, strikes precisely, and acts intelligently across all spectrums of military operations, a force defined not only by strength, but by precision, professionalism, and purpose.

His confirmation followed his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, which empowers the President to appoint Service Chiefs subject to the approval of the National Assembly. With this confirmation, he legally succeeds Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, joining other Service Chiefs as a member of the Armed Forces Council.

Lawmakers at the confirmation session praised AVM Aneke’s depth of experience, operational leadership, and intellectual grounding. They particularly commended his tenure as Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, where he improved strategic airlift capability, strengthened joint operations, and enhanced the NAF’s responsiveness in complex security environments. His leadership in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations was also lauded for its critical role in shaping Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts and internal security outcomes.

Beyond the individual merit of his appointment, AVM Aneke’s confirmation carries constitutional and strategic significance. Constitutionally, it reinforces the principle of civilian oversight in military leadership and underscores the National Assembly’s role in ensuring transparency and democratic accountability within the Armed Forces. Strategically, it marks continuity and confidence in a leadership transition aimed at consolidating NAF’s modernisation drive, expanding airpower projection, and deepening civil-military trust.

A scholar and strategist, AVM Aneke is a graduate of the United States Air War College, Montgomery, Alabama, and holds multiple advanced degrees, including Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies, International Affairs and Diplomacy, and Political Economy and Development Studies. With more than 4,300 flight hours across several aircraft types, he stands among Nigeria’s most accomplished pilots and forward-looking airpower professionals.

The confirmation session was witnessed by key dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Defence, Dr Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado. As he assumes office, AVM Aneke’s message to Nigerians is clear: the Nigerian Air Force under his command will be swift in action, precise in strike, and intelligent in execution, a force built not merely for power, but for purpose, protection, and progress.

“One unique thing about this coming Anambra election is that is an off-season election that is to say that it is not a coming in a general election across the country so, we will be having full support and enough personnel at hand.

“Let me use this medium to express our thankfulness to the Inspector of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun who had graciously approved additional deployment of personnel from other states to assist the police in Anambra.

“So, we can say that with additional deployment of personnel, you will.agree with me that adequate security will be very much guaranteed,” Ikenga stated.

The command image maker also disclosed that the leadership of the police command in the state has equally toured the eight police area command in the state, that covers not less than fifty-four divisions in the state to meet with the personnel.

He added that command has also carried out massive offensive operations as ordered by the state police boss to make sure that of the identified crime flashpoints are proactively taking care of before, during and after the elections.

“For us at the Anambra Command, it is not all about the number of personnel we have, but about the strategic deployment we are doing to ensure no place, community and town is left behind in this period of elections.

As preparations heighten for the Anambra State Governorship Election slated for November 8, 2025, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to launch targeted, intelligence-led operations across the state.

The directive, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in Awka, mandates the immediate intensification of security surveillance, coordinated raids, and intelligence gathering in identified flashpoints and volatile areas across Anambra State. The move, CP Orutugu noted, is part of a broader strategy to prevent political thuggery, cult-related violence, and the proliferation of illegal firearms as the election approaches.

The Commissioner explained that credible intelligence reports have revealed attempts by certain political actors and interest groups to recruit and arm youths for disruptive activities ahead of the polls. He warned that the Command would deal decisively with any person or group found attempting to breach public peace, intimidate voters, or manipulate the electoral process through violence or unlawful acts.

CP Orutugu further emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains strictly neutral and non-partisan, reiterating its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, uphold the integrity of the electoral process, and enforce the law without fear or favour.

He called on political stakeholders, community leaders, and citizens to cooperate with security agencies, remain law-abiding, and ensure that Anambra sets a positive example of peaceful, credible, and transparent elections in Nigeria.

The Anambra State Police Command confirms an attempted armed attack on Ezinifite Community, Nnewi South Local Government Area in the early hours of today, 27th October 2025. Fortunately, the attack was successfully repelled following a swift response and resistance from combined security team of the Police and Agunechamba Vigilante Operatives in the area.

The press statement by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, reads that the Joint Security Team engaged the assailants in a gunfire exchange, leading to the neutralization of one (1) of the attackers, while the others escaped into a surrounding bush with suspected bullet injuries. The operatives also recovered one pump-action gun from the scene as well as the body of the neutralized suspect.

Meanwhile, offensive and intelligence follow-up operations are currently ongoing in collaboration with Police tactical teams to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

It was a moment of joy in the country’s education landscape as the coast is now clear for commencement of academic activities at the Unique Open University in Lagos, one of the universities recently approved by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC).

This follows the receipt of operational license by the founder and chancellor of the university, Prof. Chris Imumolen a renowned philanthropist and youth advocate.

The vital document was handed over to him at the NUC secretariat in Abuja by the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Yusufu Abdullahi Ribadu.

Prof. Ribadu commended the university for starting with the number of facilities it has put in place.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc minps PhD, today 27th October 2025, continued his statewide strategic engagements on election patriotism and community security awareness with visits to Ihiala Area Command and Oraifite Division.

According to the press statement signed by SP Tochukwu Ikenga Police Public Relations Officer Anambra State Police Command, Awka “During the engagements, the CP interacted with some stakeholders including the President General of Ihiala Community, Commander Agunechemba Vigilante Group, the Youth Chairman, and a representative of the Local Government Chairman and officers and men of the Police Command operating in the respective jurisdictions.

In Ihiala Area Command, CP Orutugu expressed optimism about the security structural deficit, having come to an end. He commended the good people of Ihiala and Oraifite for their courage, civic responsibility, and continued cooperation with security agencies, noting that the communities have demonstrated resilience and collective resolve by refusing to allow criminal elements to influence political participation or disrupt community stability. While in Oraifite, the CP commended the cooperation of other security agencies towards the Police in the area and reiterated that the Police cannot take the glory alone for the safety in the area. He also stated that all local Vigilantes of any kind are not part of the election security.

He reaffirmed that the Police remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring that the forthcoming November 8, 2025, Governorship Election is conducted in a peaceful, secure and credible atmosphere. He emphasized that patriotism during elections means rejecting intimidation, resisting fear-based narratives and participating freely in the democratic process.

While addressing officers and men under the Area Commands, the CP charged them to maintain discipline, professionalism, courtesy and high operational standards, stressing that policing must remain people-centered, intelligence-driven and rooted in the protection of human rights.

The Commissioner further assured that the Joint Security framework remains active and will be reinforced and expanded across communities to prevent criminal infiltration and sustain peace before, during, and after the election.

Spaces for Change | S4C condemns the recent demolition of over 100 homes in Oworonshoki area of Lagos State. Preliminary findings reveal that the demolitions were carried out by the Lagos State Government Task Force, comprising the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA). Accompanied by over 50 armed policemen, the Task Force started demolishing properties at midnight on the 26th of October, at a time when residents were mostly sleeping inside their homes.

Residents alleged that those protesting the demolitions were violently assaulted by the heavily armed police officers attached to the Task Force. Videos circulating online show security forces shooting directly at the protesters. Lagos State authorities carried out the demolitions despite subsisting court orders in flagrant disregard for the rule of law.

In a statement signed by Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, Executive Director of Spaces for Change, “it is interesting to note that the Oworoshoki matter is pending before the High Court of Lagos State, in Suit No. ID/9910GCM/2025. The Court had earlier granted an interim injunction on the 23rd of October, restraining the Lagos State Government, the Attorney-General, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) from further demolishing buildings located on Ajileru Street, Ososa Extension, and Toluwalase Extension within the Itesiwaju Ajumoni Community Development Area, Oworonshoki. Defying this court order, the state agencies, together with armed police officers, demolished the buildings and homes in the named communities, leaving residents without opportunities to salvage their belongings.

Just less than four weeks after selecting demolishing properties and businesses at Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, this current demolition further reinforces the Lagos State Government’s contempt for the right to property guaranteed under Section 43 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. As specifically laid out in the case of SERAP v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (2002) 2 CHR 537 at 562, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the right to shelter (derived from the right to property) requires the government to refrain from demolishing citizens’ homes or preventing individuals and communities from reconstructing those that have been lost, adding that this duty to respect housing rights means that the state and all its institutions or agents must avoid engaging in, supporting, or permitting any action, policy, or law that
undermines personal integrity or restricts people’s freedom to use available resources as they see fit to meet their housing needs.

We call on the Lagos State government to halt the demolitions in line with subsisting court orders. Affected victims should be appropriately compensated, relocated and/or resettled, while officers who violently attacked protesters should be prosecuted. Consistent with its commitment to housing and urban justice, S4C will continue to monitor the situation in Oworonshoki while intensifying advocacy for urban and planning reforms in Lagos State that are rooted in human rights.
