    The founding Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chief Simeon Okeke, has commended the current Chairman and retired Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase for his remarkable achievements in leading the Commission.

    He said this when paid a visit to the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters located in Jabi, Abuja.

    Okeke expressed his admiration for the significant transformation that had taken place within the Commission. He took the opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government for assistance in addressing the Commission’s financial challenges.

    Speaking further, he requested the government’s support in settling the accumulated debts tied to unpaid allowances owed to staff members for their dedicated service over the years preceding Dr. Arase’s tenure.

    He emphasized that this gesture from the government would not only motivate the staff to enhance their commitment to their duties but also contribute to the success of Dr. Arase’s mission within the Commission.

    Okeke’s remarks were delivered during an impromptu courtesy visit to Dr. Arase. Speaking on the sidelines of his visit, Chief Okeke expressed his satisfaction with the positive developments he observed within the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters.

    “It is more of a pioneering work with what Arase is making of the Commission, doing it with zeal and persuasion to succeed and overcome which I know of him as a Police Officer. He has all the ingredients to overcome and his entry into this Office must have been a big obstacle but he has conquered” he noted.

    Okeke expressed that Arase has achieved a prosperous tenure within the Commission, emphasizing his contentment in witnessing the staff in their official capacities rather than as mere tenants. He urged both the current staff and future appointees to collaborate with the Chairman enthusiastically, with the aim of restoring the Commission’s former prestige.

    The Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi has highlighted seizures made through commendable efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in curbing illicit drug trade and smuggling activities within the country. He made this known at the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Lagos today.

    The briefing shed light on recent successful interceptions and seizures made by the NCS in its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Nigerian citizens and securing the nation’s borders.

    Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Adeniyi noted that the NCS intercepted a shipment of codeine syrup, a controlled substance that has been widely abused among the youth.

    The concealment of 299 cartons of codeine syrup, according to him, was discovered along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, leading to renewed concerns over the adverse societal effects stemming from the misuse and distribution of such substances.

    Adeniyi highlighted the collaborative approach with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other government bodies to address this pressing issue and protect future generations from the dangers of addiction and its associated consequences.

    He said, “As part of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our society and protecting the well-being of our citizens, the NCS has once again demonstrated its dedication to eradicating the menace of drug trafficking. Last week officers of the Federal Operating Unit Zone A, acting on credible intelligence, flagged down a DAF truck close to Ijebu-Ode Junction. An examination of the truck revealed the concealment of 299 cartons of codeine syrup along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.”

    Speaking further, Adeniyi drew attention to the persistent challenge posed by smugglers, particularly in the cases of rice and premium motor spirit (PMS) while noting that the smuggling of rice has undermined national revenue and food security, adding that efforts to smuggle PMS across the border have persisted despite economic challenges.

    He said the NCS remains resolute in its endeavors to counter these activities. Several successful operations resulted in the seizure of 4,252 bags of foreign parboiled rice across various locations, and 5,600 liters of PMS were intercepted at the Oja-odan axis in Ogun State.

    “Smugglers of rice and premium motor spirit continue to test our will to put them out of business. Smuggling of rice compromise our revenue and sabotage our food security.

    Despite the biting effects of fuel subsidy removal on our economy, smugglers still attempt to smuggle PMS across the border. They met their waterloo in different operations conducted by officers of NCS. The following seizures of both items were recorded. A total of 4, 252 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50 kg each) at Dangote/Imashayi Ogun State, Saki Axis Oyo State, Owode/Ado Odo in Ogun state, Idiroko/Ohumbe Ogun State, Okoko Mile 2 Axis in Lagos State and Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

    Similarly, 5,600 litres of premium motor spirit were intercepted and seized when smugglers attempted to takeout these strategic resource through Oja-odan axis in Ogun State,” he noted.

    He added that the NCS’s commitment to stringent law enforcement is demonstrated through the array of recent seizures, encompassing various illicit goods. These include 291 bales of second-hand clothing, 57 sacks and 4 jumbo sacks of used shoes, 486 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products, 190 pieces of rugs, 5 units of vehicles, and 170 pieces of used tires. These successful interceptions underscore the NCS’s unwavering stance on maintaining the rule of law and protecting citizens’ interests.

    “Other items seized in the last 2 weeks include: 291 Bales of Second-hand Clothing, 57 Sacks and 4 Jumbo Sacks of Used Shoes, 486 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products, 190 Pieces of Rugs, 5 Units of Vehicles and 170 pieces of used tyres,” Adeniyi noted.

    Adeniyi highlighted the NCS’s proactive approach to enhancing road safety by addressing a hidden threat—smuggled used tires. He explained that the smuggling of these tires compromises their quality and safety, which could lead to accidents, endangering the lives of drivers and passengers alike.

    According to him, “The 340 pieces of used tyres seized within the first two weeks of August 2023 by this unit is not only limited to the implementation of import prohibition lists but also a giant stride to mitigate auto crashes caused by smuggled used tyres. These tyres are squeezed, compressed and tucked into themselves for ease of concealment, thereby causing them to crack. They are oftentimes expired, their rigidity and strength compromised. Drivers could experience a blowout or sudden rupture as the steel wire meant to keep the tyres in shape has been disorganised in the course of smuggling.”

    Adeniyi urged the public to recognize the far-reaching impacts of smuggling and drug abuse and to support the NCS’s mission.

    He emphasized that these harmful activities affect the nation’s prosperity and the well-being of its citizens. Citizens were called upon to provide information that aids the NCS’s efforts in curbing smuggling and apprehending suspects.

    Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigerian Army have come to an agreement to enhance their collaboration in traffic management within Lagos.

    During a visit by a delegation from the 9 Brigade Command of the Nigerian Army, led by Brigadier General Adegoke Moses Adetuyi, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, announced this development.

    Mr. Oreagba warmly welcomed the military representatives and expressed his gratitude for their visit to the Lastma Headquarters in Oshodi, considering it a significant gesture.

    Regarding a regrettable incident involving a confrontation between a Lastma Officer and a Soldier, Mr. Oreagba reaffirmed that there exists a strong bond between these two agencies. He emphasized that LASTMA staff will continue to depend on the unwavering support provided by the Nigerian Army and other security entities throughout the State.

    Mr. Oreagba said, “we won’t abuse the relationship nor take the cordiality and warm friendliness which has existed between the Army and Lastma for granted”

    He asserted that the recurrence of such incidents could be prevented by maintaining the existing channels of communication and exploring additional new hotlines between the two agencies. This would ensure the continual resolution of issues.

    In his previous statements, Brigadier General Adegoke Moses Adetuyi, the Commander of the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, highlighted that malicious actors thrive in an environment of discord among security agencies. Hence, fostering more harmonious collaboration and extensive cooperation among all government bodies, including Lastma, is crucial.

    Commending the commendable efforts of Lastma Officials who tirelessly work day and night, Brigadier Adetuyi pledged ongoing support from the Nigerian Army’s 9th Brigade Command. This assistance aims to reinforce Lastma’s activities on the roads and guarantee the safety of traffic managers as they carry out their essential duties.

    Among the Army Officials present during the visit were Major A.A Nasir (OC MP), Major A. Sanusi, Major A.A Onwemene, Major A.K Ballo, and LT T.H Owoyemi.

    The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81st Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Muhammed Takuti Usman has inaugurated the 81 Division Combat Proficiency Competition.

    The event was a key element of the Nigerian Army’s forecasted activities for the year 2023.

    The purpose of the competition is to enhance leadership skills, foster camaraderie, promote professional competence, and prepare officers for higher responsibilities. The event is being hosted at the 243 Recce Battalion located in Ibereko Barracks, Badagry, Lagos State.

    The competition also serves to ready the participating officers for potential combat situations, given the ongoing security challenges faced by the country.

    Representing the GOC was Brigadier General MA Sadiq, the Commander of the 81 Division Garrison who emphasized that this year’s Inter-Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition would be more rigorous and demanding than previous iterations due to the thorough preparations put forth by both the competition organizers and the participating units.

    He encouraged all participating officers to give their utmost effort in order to reap the maximum benefits from the event and bring honour to their respective units.

    The GOC underscored the importance of training as a foundational element for all military operations.

    He stressed that the performance of troops in both peacetime and wartime directly stems from the quality of training they receive. He referred to training as an essential tool that guarantees heightened military professionalism.

    Major General MT Usman also mentioned that the 81st Division was meeting expectations by hosting this year’s exercise in accordance with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy, which aims to transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, well-equipped, and highly motivated force capable of fulfilling its constitutional obligations within a collaborative framework.

    The GOC provided a rundown of the criteria established to evaluate the competing formations in this year’s competition. These criteria encompassed skills such as map reading, combat swimming, weapon handling, and obstacle crossing.

    He highlighted that these requirements would serve as platforms for enhancing the combat proficiency and preparedness of junior commanders, enabling them to showcase their leadership acumen.

    He expressed gratitude towards the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for his invaluable strategic guidance and support in meeting the Division’s training needs. He reiterated the Division’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing training, as evidenced by their adherence to all Nigerian Army Training Directives for the year 2023.

    The opening ceremony was marked by the initiation of the Map Reading exercise, which was the first activity scheduled for the competition. The exercise was hotly contested, signifying the commencement of the overall competition process.

    In a remarkable display of unity and charitable spirit, the Naval Officers Wives Association (NOWA), NAVTRAC Chapter, under the leadership of Chairperson Mrs. Adarema Nwatu, has said it will embark on a significant medical endeavor aimed at enhancing community well-being and individual assistance.

    Mrs. Nwatu disclosed this during a visit to the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, at the command’s headquarters in Apapa, Monday.

    With the backing of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), the initiative signifies a crucial advancement in the association’s impact on the Navy’s host community.

    Mrs. Nwatu highlighted that the outreach effort will prioritize essential medical services such as screening for high blood pressure, diabetes, and malaria, as well as providing routine medications for pregnant women.

    The aspiration is to offer fundamental healthcare support, and it is our sincere hope, bolstered by faith, that we can distribute mosquito nets to combat malaria’s prevalence within our community.

    According to her, “NOWA, like we know, is an NGO and a philanthropic organization. So, we try to establish civil, military relationship with our host communities. The music school in Ota is one community that has shown us some love in the Navy and we feel that the little thing we can do is to reach out to them and that’s why we’re planning on having a medical outreach.

    “We are not impacting everybody but at least we are looking at between 150 to 100 people. We are looking across board from children to pregnant women, the old ones. We are looking at having medical outreach. We are also going to be talking to the youths on the need to say no to drugs and sexual abstinence. And then for the children of course we encourage them to take their studies seriously and then the old ones we look into their health matters the best way we can.

    “We’ll be checking for high blood pressure, for diabetes, anti-malaria, pregnant women routine drugs. Just basic medical services and we hope and believe God that we’ll be able to share out mosquito nets so that we can fight back malaria from our community.”

    Reacting, the Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu expressed profound appreciation for the remarkable efforts of the Naval Officers Wives Association, NOWA Coordinator, Mrs Adarema Nwatu and her team during their visit.

    Admiral Nwatu acknowledged the complex nature of orchestrating such an event within NAVTRAC (Navy Training Command), considering the widespread deployment of personnel across the nation.

    He commended the coordinator’s proactive approach in bringing NOWA to fruition within NAVTRAC. He noted despite NAVTRAC being the most substantial command in terms of naval manpower, with an impressive contingent of over 25 percent of Navy officers and personnel serving as trainers or trainees, the dispersion of training schools across the country posed a logistical challenge.

    He said the challenge of uniting everyone and arranging inclusive events was underscored, given the limitations of unstable network connectivity for online gatherings and the resource-intensive nature of physically visiting each school.

    “Your initiative in tackling this challenge head-on to establish NOWA within NAVTRAC is highly commendable. The significance of such unity cannot be overstated,” stated the FOC

    He further noted that, “While NAVTRAC boasts a significant proportion of the Navy’s human resources, the geographic distribution has created hurdles. I urge you not to be disheartened; your proactive efforts are already making a significant impact. Strive to involve those who are physically distant in your initiatives to the fullest extent possible.”

    He also underscored the significance of the upcoming medical outreach program scheduled for October, a major point of discussion during the visit. NOWA’s pivotal role in elevating the well-being of officers’ families was acknowledged.

    He said “NOWA’s role in fostering the welfare of our officers’ families is of paramount importance. It’s time for NOWA to evolve and transform further. The responsibility lies with each one of you present here today to deepen your engagement with the service. The potential for positive change is substantial.

    “I think NOWA has to evolve, transform and the challenge is to those of you who are here to endear yourself more to the service. There is so much more that you can do. There is a lot of hopelessness in the psyche of spouses of younger officers who are not used to the challenges or the kinds of jobs we do. So, NOWA must play a much stronger role for RANOWA. I must congratulate you over the choice of Ota community for the event because the community has been very good to the command. We are beneficiaries of over 50 acres of land there and so, I think the medical outreach there will be most welcome.”

    Addressing the choice of Ota community as the venue for the upcoming event, he acknowledged the community’s generosity, having granted the command access to more than 50 acres of land.

    He added that the collaborative relationship laid a solid foundation for the forthcoming medical outreach in the region.

    The Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has initiated the revitalization of corporate social responsibility programs within the NCS.

    The initiative aims to give back to the society that has supported the Service in fulfilling its primary objectives.

    On Monday, the Acting CGC reached out to Dorian Home in Akure, Ondo State—a charitable orphanage dedicated to social development.

    He emphasized that the service holds the responsibility to provide support and aid to the communities in which they operate and carry out their duties.

    Recognizing Dorian Home’s strong foundation, dedication, and enthusiasm, he highlighted its potential to effectively pursue its goals.

    “We’ve seen that this place has capacity for almost a thousand kids, so they need to feed them, they need to clothe them, and they need to provide them medicaments.

    “So in any of these areas periodically, we would be looking at our stores, and we would be sending off those kind of items that can assist them to achieve the objectives for which this kind of homes are set up”, he added.

    Continuing his official tour of zone ‘A’, the head of Customs proceeded to the Ondo/Ekiti Area Command where he was warmly welcomed by the Area Controller, Comptroller Beatrice Eboka.

    One of the key activities during his visit was the inauguration and thorough examination of the recently refurbished housing facilities designated for the command’s officers and personnel.

    During his speech to the dedicated officers and personnel of the Command, the Acting CGC urged them to maintain a high level of diligence in their operational activities and record-keeping while emphasizing on diligence which is vital to ensure that goods intended for export adhere to international quality standards.

    “You have a role to ensure that the products shipped out of this place meet international standards”, he noted.

    “You must not do anything to delay the processes, ensure that they do not stay too long in your hands, documentation must be done in good time so that the products do not get bad before they’re shipped out of the country”, he added.

    The Ag. CGC also visited the palace of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Alade Toyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi CFR, The Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure, to pledge his loyalty and commitment to the service to continue to be a responsible Government Agency.

    “Customs will continue to be a responsible government agency, respecting the laws of the land and maintaining a very good relationship where we operate.”

    The CP also lauded the achievement of police officers who secured victory in a competition held in Delta State, resulting in their laurel win.

    He further urged himself to initiate strategies for the training of officers and personnel in the art of Taekwondo.

    “Lagos is known for excellent.. You have shown resilience, commitment and courage by winning the medals and bronze. At Lagos State Command, I think we can leverage on the excellence with the deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations to discuss on the possibility of enhancing our operational capacity.

    “The training of our men on Taekwondo, will add value to self defense capacity of Officers and men of the command, so in the coming days we would be engaging you towards possibility of having trainings that will expose officers and men of the command through technicality you have perfected so that an average policeman will be exposed to taekwondo and apply it for self defense which will help them in the line of their duty.”

    The Commissioner, though, mentioned that if there’s one thing that truly uplifts a police officer’s spirits, it’s promotion. This is because it serves as a significant source of motivation for the officer in question.

    “Aside this, the greatest honour I never expect as a leader in the command is to sur over the promotion of my officers who have demonstrated consistent professional excellent, good service record and moral strength to discharge their duty.

    “This is the highest I will be decorating as the commissioner of Police in Lagos, today we Will be inducting one thousand four hundred policemen to the officer cadets of Nigeria police. It means a lot, there is a wide gap from being an Inspector to Assistant Superintendent of Police.

    “You all are now officers of the police, no more diserted police, the new rank comes with other obligations in terms of professional outlook, ability to dissert complex security issues and take decision that will align with the law and now there is no more excuse in your duty.

    “The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has said it over again since he assumed the office that promotion under his watch will now be based on merit and seniority. This set is the first that will benefit from the policy, I want you all to be proud that you earned it on merit.

    “The IGP’s stand on professional ground and he want us all to do same, excellence should be our watch world at all time. I appeal to you to see the promotion as another steps in your career, I always believe certain values brought you here don’t want you to change the values and your character.”
