In a bid to enhance educational opportunities for primary school pupils in Ipokia Local Government Area (ILGA) of Ogun State, the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, in collaboration with Teach for Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has provided educational support to 100 pupils from five different schools in the region.
The initiative, known as the Cloth a Child Initiative, was spearheaded by Teach for Nigeria members Mrs. Akanbi Olutoyosi, Mr. Mathew Emmanuel, and Mrs. Obot Aniebietabasi, who approached the Command seeking support. The program aimed to address the challenge of tattered school uniforms affecting the studies and psychological well-being of some pupils.
Identifying 20 pupils from each of the selected schools for urgent attention, the Command expanded the scope of the initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Alongside providing complete sets of uniforms and socks, the Command included writing materials such as books, stationery, chalks, and whiteboard markers for the schools to facilitate teaching.
During the presentation ceremony held at IPLG School I & II Idiroko on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, represented by Deputy Comptroller Administration DC Charles Ogunesan, congratulated the beneficiaries and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education and well-being.
Alhaja Oduntan Ireti, the Ipokia Local Government Education Secretary, commended the initiative and highlighted the significant role of teachers in shaping learners’ lives. She lauded the collaborative efforts of the NCS and the NGO in uplifting the learning conditions of the pupils.
Mr. Bankole Joseph, the Education Officer, expressed gratitude to Ogun I Command and encouraged sustained synergy with the education board. He commended the NGO for championing the initiative and urged them to continue their efforts.
Miss Hunnesi Florence, a primary 5 pupil, expressed appreciation on behalf of the beneficiaries for the support received. Mr. Babatunde Atteh, senior coach of the NGO, thanked the Command for its support and congratulated the beneficiaries on the success of the initiative.
Parents of the beneficiaries expressed sincere appreciation to the Nigeria Customs Service and the NGO for their support. The event was well-attended by the management team of Ogun 1 Command, representatives of the Department of State Security, members of the education board, head teachers, parents, Idiroko youths, and other dignitaries.

Tin-Can: NCS Seizes 11 Rifles, 6 Pistols, Ammunition, Drugs Worth Billions of Naira
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin-Can Island Customs Command, has made significant seizures of firearms, drugs, and ammunition at the Tin-Can Island Port since January 2024, according to an announcement made on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, the Customs Area Controller of Tin-Can Customs Command, disclosed that a total of 11 rifles, six pistols, and a substantial quantity of ammunition were intercepted from different containers at the port.
Nnadi emphasized that due to ongoing investigations, the source of the arms and ammunition would not be disclosed at this time.
Highlighting the success of the command’s anti-smuggling efforts, Nnadi stated, “Our collaboration with partner agencies in the area of enforcement has yielded significant results.” He listed the seized firearms, including various rifles and pistols found in different containers imported into the country at various times.
“In addition to the firearms seizures, we also intercepted psychotropic substances, with the assistance of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” Nnadi added. “Several kilograms of Cannabis Indica and 23 packages containing 23 kilograms of Heroin were confiscated through our joint efforts.”
The Customs Area Controller reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to ensuring the safety and security of the nation. He emphasized that the intercepted items were intended for nefarious activities, including support for insurgents and kidnapping, posing significant threats to national security.
Switching to revenue generation, Nnadi reported that the Tin-Can Customs Command had generated a total revenue of N240,302,000,000.00 from January to March 15, 2024. This revenue exceeded the monthly target of N94,000,000,000.00, surpassing January’s target by 107% and February’s by 141%.
Nnadi refrained from providing the percentage for March, noting that the month was still in progress. The impressive revenue figures reflect the command’s commitment to meeting and exceeding its revenue targets, contributing to the nation’s economic stability.
The Customs Area Controller concluded by expressing appreciation for the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in achieving these significant milestones.

Customs At Idiroko Make Seizures of Ammunition, Cannabis Sativa, Other Contrabands Worth Over N557 Million
In a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat smuggling activities, the Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a cache of life-threatening ammunition, harmful substances, and other prohibited items.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko on Friday, March 15, 2024.
According to Comptroller Shuaibu, the seizure occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024, during an anti-smuggling operation along the border line. The Command’s operatives intercepted smuggled ammunition totaling 940 rounds of live ammunition, cleverly concealed within sacks of cassava flakes, locally known as garri.
Detailing the operation, Comptroller Shuaibu revealed that the Command had been tracking the smuggled items for over two weeks, originating from the Republic of Benin, before they were eventually smuggled into the country. Despite the surveillance and security measures implemented by the smugglers, the Command’s superior security network facilitated the seizure of the items, although the suspects managed to evade arrest by abandoning the contraband.
In addition to the ammunition seizure, the Command also confiscated 123 sacks and 3,172 parcels of cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp), 380 pieces of donkey skin, 304 bales of used clothes, and 910 cartons of frozen poultry products. These seizures were made at various strategic locations across Ogun State through the Command’s intelligence network and 24-hour patrol and anti-smuggling activities. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items amounted to N557,120,828.00.
Comptroller Shuaibu reiterated the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties, highlighting its zero-casualty operations as a significant achievement. He warned recalcitrant smugglers of impending consequences, emphasizing that their days are numbered, and they will face the full wrath of the law.
Furthermore, he appealed to patriotic Nigerians to collaborate with the Command in its fight against smuggling, stressing the grave threats posed by contraband to national security. Comptroller Shuaibu also provided an update on the Command’s revenue generation efforts, reporting a total revenue of N24,283,788 generated from January to date.
In conclusion, Comptroller Shuaibu expressed gratitude to the Customs management team, gallant operatives, Customs Intelligence Unit, Customs Police Unit, sister agencies, stakeholders, and the press for their unwavering support and professionalism in enhancing the Command’s operations.

Col. Bello Fadile Recounts 25th Anniversary of Freedom From Life Sentence
In a reflective interview over the weekend, retired Nigerian Army Colonel Bello Fadile, holding a Ph.D. in Law, recounted the momentous event of his release 25 years ago from what was then Argungu Prison, now known as a Correctional Facility, in Kebbi State.
Col. Bello Fadile, formerly an intelligence officer, shared insights into the unexpected turn of events that led to his liberation from a life sentence during the regime of late General Sani Abacha. He detailed that the conviction stemmed from advocating for a non-violent composition of an Interim Government to replace the military junta.
March 4, 1999, became a pivotal day in Fadile’s life as he vividly recalled the early hours when a retired Warrant Officer, now a prison warder, delivered the long-awaited news of freedom. The announcement marked the end of a three-day period of fervent prayer and fasting among Fadile and his fellow inmates.
Fadile’s upcoming book, titled “Nine Lives: The Bello Fadile Memoirs,” captures the essence of this transformative moment. In his own words, he described the crucial moment: “I had tap, tap, tap, on my cell window and Colonel! Colonel!! wake up… ‘Oga you don free, congratulations sir, start packing your things, you are going home.’”

Navy Records Successes In Anti-Crude Oil Theft Operations
The Nigerian Navy’s Operation DELTA SANITY, aimed at combating crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering, has reported continuous successes in its efforts from February 5 to February 26, 2024. Various naval platforms deployed for the operation have conducted aggressive patrols to address the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s maritime environment.
During this period, multiple illegal refining sites (IRS), metal storage tanks, ovens, wooden boats, dugout pits, fibre boats, and pumping machines were targeted and appropriately handled. Notably, Forward Operating Base FORMOSO in Bayelsa State, on February 19, conducted anti-crude oil theft operations around Brass River, Akassa, Lagosgbene, Tebidaba, and Oyeregbene general areas. The operation led to the discovery of an illegal refining site and two wooden boats laden with 62.9 barrels (10,000 litres) of suspected stolen crude oil.
Forward Operating Base ESCRAVOS, on February 19, also carried out anti-crude oil theft operations around Aghor-Kutu Community in Warri Southern Local Government Area of Delta State. The operation revealed an illegal refining site, three ovens, one reservoir, one pumping machine, 10 jerricans, and 38 drums laden with 195.9 barrels (31,150 litres) of suspected stolen crude oil.
Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER, during operations from February 20 to 23 around Abuloma, Abonnema, Woji, and Taraba jetty in Borikiri, Rivers State, raided a car wash used for storing illegally refined products. The team discovered an illegal refining site, seven ovens, 60 drums, and two reservoirs laden with about 120,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil.
On February 21, Forward Operating Base IGBOKODA conducted anti-crude oil theft operations around Agadagba in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The team discovered four wooden boats laden with 1,200 litres of products suspected to be stolen Automotive Gas Oil.
Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH patrol team, on February 21, intercepted two private vehicles conveying 79 sacks of product suspected to be illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil around Okarki general areas of Bayelsa State. Additionally, the team, in conjunction with NSS 030, intercepted five ovens, nine drums, 25 iron pipes, one pumping machine, and one wooden boat laden with about 1,500 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil.
On February 22, Forward Operating Base BADAGRY patrol team conducted cordon and search operations around Agbojetho Akorin in Lagos State. The team discovered 9,000 litres of products suspected to be illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil in a building.
Furthermore, on the same day, Forward Operating Base IBAKA patrol team intercepted a large wooden boat from the Republic of Cameroon around Uyenghe in Ibaka area, Cross River State. The boat was laden with about 5,100 litres of product suspected to be illegally syphoned Premium Motor Spirit.
In summary, during the reviewed period, three illegal refining sites, 15 ovens, two reservoirs, eight wooden boats, and one fibre boat were appropriately handled. The Nigerian Navy’s anti-crude oil theft operations denied oil thieves approximately 55,120 barrels of suspected stolen crude oil, 141,200 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, and 9,000 litres of illegally siphoned Premium Motor Spirit. The estimated value of the denied products amounts to N7,422,792,302.58.
The success of the Nigerian Navy’s operations demonstrates the effectiveness of Operation DELTA SANITY in curbing illegal activities and safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment. The Navy remains committed to its mission, contributing to national security and prosperity.

NCS, DG TAXUD EU Forge Alliance For Streamlined Export Processes, Trade Growth
In a bid to enhance export monitoring and trade facilitation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has forged a collaboration with the Directorate General Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD) of the European Union (EU). The announcement was made during a meeting at the NCS Corporate Headquarters on February 27, 2024, by Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.The collaboration aims at streamlining export documentation processes, with the NCS serving as the competent authority for rules of origin. Comptroller General Adeniyi assured that the NCS is committed to facilitating the export process, highlighting the importance of fostering peace through flourishing trade.
Acknowledging the initiative as a step towards economic union, the CG welcomed the Registered Exporters program. He called for a framework between Customs and DG TAXUD, emphasizing the need for a digital platform to enhance document validation for export commodities.“As part of our outreach program, we are working with other Nigerian government agencies to maximize opportunities and reduce export processing time,” stated the CG. He highlighted the establishment of a ‘one-stop-shop’ export seat for documentation, aiming to expedite the release of goods from Nigerian ports.
The CG also announced plans to conduct a Time Release Study for exports, focusing on identifying bureaucratic obstacles causing delays. The goal is to create a faster and more efficient system for exporters.Gary Wilkinson from DG TAXUD discussed the tariff discount of 4 percent for Nigerian products exported to the EU under the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) scheme. He emphasized periodic visits to developing countries to ensure the authenticity of exported products and highlighted the importance of cooperation between Customs departments in trade agreements.
