    The Spanish Naval Warship BAM METEORO has arrived in Nigerian waters, marking the second visit by the Spanish Navy in the past year. The ship’s arrival is part of the European Union’s Coordinated Maritime Presence initiative, aimed at enhancing security in the Gulf of Guinea.

    During the welcoming ceremony, Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, highlighted the significance of the visit. He praised the Spanish Navy’s ongoing collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, noting that the ship has been patrolling the waters without any negative reports—a testament to the effective suppression of maritime crime in the region. Rear Admiral Hassan emphasized the evolving partnership, with plans for joint exercises and the introduction of Nigerian officers as sea riders on the Spanish vessel to foster knowledge exchange and cooperation.

    In his remarks, Ambassador Juan Ignacio praised the deepening relationship between the two navies, describing it as a true partnership. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maritime security, noting a decrease in piracy and criminal activities. The Ambassador underscored the importance of continuous engagement and collaboration, highlighting the significance of the Nigerian Navy’s leadership in regional maritime security.

    Ambassador Ignacio also announced that two Nigerian Navy officers will join the BAM METEORO for the remainder of its deployment, a move aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and operational synergy. He expressed optimism about the evolving partnership and the ongoing efforts to address maritime security challenges collectively.

    Accompanying the Ambassador were Deputy Head of Mission Maria Higon, Lt Cdr Inigo Franco, Lt Miguel Lopez, Lt Francisco Lamas, Sub-Lt Jose Seco, and other officers from the Spanish ship.

    The visit underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthening their maritime security cooperation and advancing their strategic partnership in the Gulf of Guinea.

    Family kicks against release of suspects who defiled 15-year-old girl, petitions Lagos State commissioner of Police

    The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspects for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl.

    The police have also stepped up a manhunt for one of the suspects who is on the run.

    The Festac Police Division arrested the suspects, but they were released on bail.

    Meanwhile, the family of the victim has accused the Festac Police Division of not doing the needful as they have failed to charge the suspects to court. The family has petitioned the Lagos State police commissioner to wade into the matter and get justice for the girl.

    The family also called on the attorney general of Lagos State, Director of Public Prosecution and the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to intervene, so that justice would prevail.

    The petition by the survivor’s attorney, G.E Anaba, senior partner of Ruhm & Associate, Lagos, called for the immediate prosecution of the suspects, Desmond, Leonard, Craig and Henry.

    Anaba’s petition read, “We are solicitors to Miss (names withheld), hereinafter referred to as ‘Our Client’. We hereby submit this petition to draw attention to the grave issue of sexual harassment faced by a 15-year-old girl, which commenced when she just turned 13 years of age at the hands of the above-mentioned persons. This incident has not only caused profound psychological harm to the victim but also violates her fundamental rights and the laws of Nigeria.

    “That, in 2022, Mr. Desmond approached our client while she was riding a bicycle with other children in Corporation Estate, Amuwo Odofin, where they both reside, and started conversing with her.

    “The conversation ended with him taking her number. A few days after this, he invited her to his house where himself and Mr. Craig were present. He then forced our client to give both himself and Mr. Craig oral sex and forced her to swallow the sperm, after which he proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her despite the fact that she is a minor. Following this, he told her that if she told anyone, he would post videos of her having sex on the Internet and sent her a website address [www.shares.com] to show that he intended to make good his threat.

    “Also, Mr. Desmond was in the habit of giving our client alcohol before carrying out these crimes. On the first occasion of Mr. Desmond defiling our client, he did so without any protection whatsoever and asked her to drink salt and water after he had his way with her.

    “Our client also informed us that he continued these heinous acts till date and frequently too. He would reach out to her by sending her WhatsApp messages or call her phone number ordering her to come to his house in Corporation Estate. He would further threaten her that he would post her videos on the Internet, if she did not comply.

    “In 2024, Desmond went with his friend Leonard to our client’s mother’s shop in Amuwo, where she sells shoes and t-shirts. He stated that they were there to buy some wares. Leonard then asked for our client’s number on the pretense that she send him some pictures of the new wares her mother would bring via WhatsApp.

    “Some days after he collected her number, he opened conversations with our client on WhatsApp asking her to send pictures of some items from her mom’s shop, after which he asked her what relationship she had with Desmond. Our client opened up to him and told him all that transpired between her, Desmond and Mr. Craig and how he had continuously had carnal knowledge of her. Leonard then told our client to tell Desmond that she liked him and that they were in a relationship. Our client informed Desmond of this with hopes that it might protect her. However, Desmond hurled insults at her telling her that she should behave herself and show up when he called her to come to his house or risk being exposed.

    “In May 2024, Leonard asked our client to come to Desmond’s house. Upon her arrival, they both forced our client to have oral sex and sexual intercourse with them that fateful day after which they gave her postinor 2 [a contraceptive pill].

    “On the September 1, 2024, Mr. Henry Chiokwe contacted our client asking her to come to his house in Durbar Estate, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, by 6pm on Friday September 20, 2024. That he had obtained her sex video from the person with whom she had sex at Corporation Estate. He stated that if she did not comply, he would post the said videos around the estate where she resides.

    “It should be noted that our client and her family moved out of Corporation Estate into Durbar Estate in 2023. It was at this point that our client told her family, who reached out to us.

    “We acknowledge that Nigeria has laws aimed at protecting minors from sexual offenses, including the Child Rights Act and provisions in the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    “More particularly, Section 137, Criminal Law of Lagos State, covers defilement of a child: ‘Any person who has unlawful sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.’

    Section 148 of the Criminal Law of Lagos states that knowledge of age of victim is immaterial: ‘Except as otherwise expressly stated, it is immaterial, age immaterial. In the case of any of the offences defined in this Chapter committed with respect to a woman or girl under a specified age, that the defendant did not know that the woman or girl was under that age, or believed that she was not under that age.’

    “These laws recognize the importance of safeguarding children against all forms of exploitation and violence. The actions of Mr. Desmond are in direct violation of these protections. Section 138 of the Criminal Law of Lagos states that a householder permitting defilement of a child on his premises is guilty of a felony: ‘Any person who, being the owner or occupier of any permitting premises, or having, acting, or assisting in the defilement of a management or control of any premises, induces or child on his knowingly permits any child to resort to or be in or on premises for the purpose of unlawful sexual intercourse or indecent dealing, is guilty of a felony and liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.’

    “We are calling upon relevant authorities, including the Lagos State government, law enforcement agencies and child protection agencies, to take immediate action in this case. Specifically, we urge swift legal action and protection of the victim. Sexual harassment and defilement is an affront to human dignity and must be addressed decisively. Children have the right to grow up free from fear and harm.

    “We hereby call on the authorities to take swift action against these persons to ensure that justice is served and to protect other potential victims from similar abuse.

    “There are WhatsApp messages [as evidence] exchanged between our client and these perpetrators. Kindly find attached the birth certificate of our client to this petition.”

    FEATURE: How Long Will Yahaya Bello Continue With This Lawless Act? — By Richards Ibe

    The ex-Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, who handed over to the current governor of the state, Usman Ododo in January this year after his two terms of four-years-tenure, has consistently been in the news in the past eight months.

    It has been from one drama to the other bordering on his stewardship and how he handled the affairs of the state under his tenure.

    Bello, who was alleged to have defrauded the state to the tune of N84 billion during his tenure, have done everything in and out of the books to avoid his trial spearheaded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the EFCC had dragged the former governor before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja for alleged N84 billion money laundering offences, alongside his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Sulaiman and Abdulsalam Hudu.

    The Anti-graft agency was prosecuting the quartet on an amended 17-count charge of money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of fund to tune of N84, 062,406,089.88 (Eighty-four Billion, Sixty-two Million, Four Hundred and Six Thousand, Eighty-nine Naira, Eighty-eight Kobo).

    To make way for Yahaya Bello’s inclusion in the trial, prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court of an application before it for the amendment of the charges against the defendants, dated February 5, 2024, and filed the same day.

    After prayers that the amended charges be read to the defendants for them to take their pleas, the judge had granted the prayer, overruling objections from A.M Aliyu SAN, and Olusegun Joolawo SAN, counsels to Ali Bello and Suleiman, first and second defendants.

    Count one of the charges had read: “That you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, Yahaya Adoza Bello (still at large) and Abdulsalam Hudu (still at large), sometime in September, 2015 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to convert the total sum of N80,246,470,089.88 (Eighty Billion, Two Hundred and Forty-six Million, Four Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Eighty-nine Naira, Eighty-eight Kobo), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of your unlawful activity to wit: criminal breach of trust and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(b) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended.”

    Also distancing itself from the proceeds of fraud, the American International School, Abuja had in April 2024 refunded to the EFCC the sum of $760,000 paid by Yahaya Bello as advanced school fees for his children at the tail end of his administration as governor of Kogi State.

    Bello was alleged to have paid $720,000 in advance as fees for five of his children in Grade Levels 2 to 8 in the school from the coffers of the Kogi State Government.

    Confirming the development in April, the EFCC Spokesman, Dele Oyewale, had declared “The school has refunded the entire $760, 000 to the EFCC’s recovery account,”

    Going into hiding, Yahaya Bello had severally refused to appear in court in person to clear the allegations raised against him.

    Some eminent Nigerians had pleaded with Yahaya Bello to come out and answer the charges against him and that he should not be giving former governors bad name.

    One of those who gave the advice was the immediate-past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Sunday, 28th of April 2024.

    Speaking at a Redeemed Christian Church of God in Makurdi, Benue State during the thanksgiving service organised by his aides for his 63rd birthday celebration, Ortom advised Bello to come out of hiding and answer his case with the EFCC.

    Ortom had said that Yahaya Bello’s continued hiding would bring disgrace to former governors across the country.

    “I want to use this opportunity to advise my younger brother and friend, Governor Yahaya Bello, not to disgrace former governors.

    “You don’t need to hide. You don’t need to resist arrest or anything. Go there and respond. The EFCC (officials) are human beings. If they are making inquiries, the laws are there.

    “I have tried to get him on the phone, but I could not. I have tried those around him but I could not, so I want this to be noted. Wherever he is, if he can hear me, thank God the press is here, he should come out.” Ortom had stated.

    Even though immunity no longer covers the ex-Governor, he has reportedly been assisted to evade arrest by his successor, Kogi State Governor Ododo, presently enjoying immunity as the sitting governor of the North Central state.

    To ensure that justice is served, some eminent Nigerians have also called on Governor Ododo to hand over Yahaya Bello to the law for prosecution.

    A political activist, Usman Okai Austin had cautioned Governor Ododo against being hypocritical and obstructing anti-graft war.

    He had charged Ododo to demonstrate his dedication to fighting corruption by taking concrete steps to hand over Yahaya Bello to the EFCC for investigation.

    In a statement, Okai had also questioned Ododo’s commitment to fighting corruption, particularly in light of allegations that he is protecting Bello.

    He criticized the enacted Kogi State anti-corruption Bill under Ododo, as he accused Ododo of hypocrisy and labeled the legislation as a mockery of the entire anti-corruption system.

    Okai cited and faulted an occasion when Ododo was reportedly seen “accompanying Bello to a Sallah celebration in Okene, despite Bello’s alleged involvement in corrupt activities.

    “This perceived complicity has raised concerns about the governor’s true intentions in the fight against corruption and has prompted calls for him to take decisive action to uphold the rule of law.

    “As a prominent figure in Kogi State politics, it is imperative that governor Ododo addresses these concerns and takes concrete steps to demonstrate his commitment to combating corruption and promoting good governance in Kogi State.

    “Despite his declaration to ‘attack corrupt practices and make it impossible for corruption to thrive,’ his actions suggest otherwise.

    “To genuinely demonstrate his dedication to fighting corruption, Governor Ododo must take concrete steps, such as handing Yahaya Bello over to the EFCC for investigation.

    “Until then, his actions will be seen as hypocritical and obstructing the anti-corruption war.

    “We urge Governor Ododo to practice what he preaches and take meaningful action against corruption by handing over the wanted Bello to the EFCC.”

    A popular activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju also charged Governor Ododo to hand over his predecessor, Yahaya Bello to the EFCC for trial.

    “Ododo, the impunity-loving governor of Kogi State should hand over Yahaya Bello to the EFCC to face trial for all his corrupt acts.” Adeyanju wrote on his Facebook page.

    While Ododo has failed to heed the advice, the anti-graft agency has been seeking ways to bring Yahaya Bello to justice.

    In an attempt to bring the ex-Governor to justice, some EFCC operatives had on Wednesday 17th of April 2024 stormed Yahaya Bello’s Abuja home at Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

    Ododo had reportedly assisted in whisking away Bello in his official car from the scene to evade the arrest.

    Kicking against the EFCC move, the ex-governor’s media office, in a statement, had claimed that the presence of the operatives in Bello’s residence negated the order of injunction granted on February 9, 2024, by the High Court of Justice, Lokoja Division, in Suit No. HCL/68M/2024 between Yahaya Bello v. EFCC, restraining the commission either by itself or its agents from harassing, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting him, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive fundamental rights enforcement action.

    Despite Yahaya Bello been declared wanted and going into hiding for several months, especially after the sting operation in his Abuja home, he is reported to be perpetually hanging around his successor Ododo to evade arrest.

    On Wednesday September 18th 2024, Yahaya Bello came out of hiding for months and visited the EFCC office in the company of Ododo.

    At the EFCC office, he was said to have snapped pictures with security guards, and to create the impression that he has turned himself in to the anti-graft agency.

    But the EFCC was said to have been hindered from arresting Yahaya Bello as Ododo’s governorship immunity prevented the operatives from taking further action.

    Doing otherwise, would have resulted in confrontation between the security personnel protecting the governor and the anti-graft agency, which may lead to gun duel and lost of lives.

    Speaking on the latest development on Wednesday, EFCC officials said Ododo helped Bello to escape again just like in April.

    One of the officials said, “Yahaya Bello has not been arrested. The Kogi State governor prevented operatives from doing their work yesterday just like he did the other time. He took him away and our men could not do anything because of the immunity he (Ododo) is enjoying.”

    In another attempt to get Bello to answer the charges against him, EFCC operatives again on the same night of Wednesday September 18th 2024 stormed the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja.

    Yahaya Bello, again was reported to have evaded arrest by EFCC operatives with the assistance of his successor, Governor Ododo, leveraging on the immunity being enjoyed by Ododo as a sitting governor.

    Apart from Ododo’s immunity covering, which Yahaya Bello has been hiding under in the past eight months, some questions are also now on the lips of some well-meaning Nigerians.

    Topmost of these questions is if Yahaya Bello is also getting support and protection from another influencial personality in the Presidency, who has security background.

    With these dodging of the law going on for months, it is hightime the fight against corruption in the country is really allowed to thrive.

    As a matter of urgency, Yahaya Bello should immediately turn himself in for the N84 billion money laundering trial.

    He should have nothing to fear if his hands are clean and has served the people of Kogi State to the best of his ability for eight years.

    Even though Bello played a great role in Ododo’s emergence as the governor of Kogi State, Ododo should now start concentrating on serving the good people of Kogi State as he has sworn to do and allow Bello to carry his cross and face the course of the law.

    Any other influencial person backing Yahaya Bello in the Presidency, irrespective of whatever he has gained from Bello in the past, should also stop forthwith in order not to soil the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who didn’t shy away from suspending a Minister linked to corruption.

    In recent months, Nigeria’s Immigration Service has garnered positive attention, particularly at its FESTAC Passport Office in Lagos. Since February 2024, when Deputy Comptroller Bashir Bala took charge, the office has undergone significant reforms, much to the satisfaction of applicants. The days of long delays and touting seem to be over, as the agency has streamlined operations to ensure efficient passport issuance, even in the face of growing demand.

    One notable change is the office’s extended operational hours. Since Comptroller Bala assumed leadership, the FESTAC office has been operating on Saturdays. This move was specifically implemented to tackle the backlog of applications that had plagued the office for months. By working weekends, the office has made substantial progress in clearing pending applications, bringing relief to thousands of Nigerians eager to secure their passports.

    Perhaps one of the most remarkable improvements has been the elimination of touting. In the past, the presence of middlemen, who offered to “fast-track” passport processing for a fee, was a common frustration for applicants. However, under the new leadership, these practices have been stamped out. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has enforced strict measures to ensure that applicants no longer fall prey to such unscrupulous activities.

    Additionally, the Federal Government has made it easier for applicants to navigate the passport application process by streamlining online registration and payment. Gone are the days when applicants had to worry about officers demanding cash payments. Today, all payments are made directly through the online platform, ensuring transparency and accountability. No officer is allowed to collect cash from applicants, a major step in combating corruption within the system.

    The improved processes have significantly reduced waiting times. In the past, applicants could wait for months before receiving their passports, but now, the process has been dramatically shortened. “Within two weeks, I was able to get my international passport,” said one applicant. “It’s such a relief compared to how long it used to take.”

    Deputy Comptroller Bala’s leadership has clearly lifted the face of the FESTAC passport office, and all procedures are now diligently followed. Officers at the FESTAC office have become more cooperative and professional, treating applicants with courtesy and respect. This shift in attitude has not gone unnoticed, with many applicants expressing satisfaction with the service they received.

    Even though the Federal Government recently increased the cost of obtaining passports, many applicants remain pleased with the overall improvements in service delivery. The efficiency, professionalism, and transparency at the FESTAC office have ensured that most leave the office with a positive experience, despite the higher fees.

    Recall that on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, the Presidency confirmed the appointment of DCG Kemi Nanna Nandap as the new Comptroller-General, so the appointment of Kemi Nanna Nandap as the new Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the current minister of interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has deepen the ongoing reforms in the service and create a robust mechanism for efficient and dedicated service delivery to Nigerians, as well as strengthen the nation’s security through proactive and effective border security and migration management.

    Nandap, who is the third woman to head the service, succeeded Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju and her leadership is making significant contributions to the ongoing evolution of immigration services in the nation. 

    It will interest you to know that the minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said that proper identification is needed for government to implement its transformative policies targeted at improving livelihood.

    The Minister who was speaking at the 6th National Day of Identity, 2024, argued that it would be difficult for any government to protect or provide for citizens it does not know.

    According to Olubunmi “If you do not get the identity of the people right, you can’t protect who you don’t know. That is the truth. You can’t provide for who you don’t know and for you to do that, you must get the identity right.

    On Friday, September 13, 2024, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) successfully concluded its five-day inaugural workshop on Maritime Security and the Blue Economy. The workshop, which took place at the IMION Auditorium, focused on the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in securing Nigeria’s vast maritime environment and harnessing the potential of the Blue Economy.

    In his closing remarks, IMION’s Director General, Rear Admiral TC Udofia (Retired), emphasized the importance of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) and the need for stronger cooperation among national and international maritime stakeholders. He praised the participants, which included representatives from the Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and other key organizations, for their dedication throughout the workshop.

    Rear Admiral Udofia highlighted that the workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of the Blue Economy, increase their capacity to support sustainable maritime activities, and improve compliance with environmental regulations. “The knowledge gained here will help shape sound policies that promote a safer and more secure maritime environment for the Blue Economy to thrive,” he stated.

    The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including maritime infrastructure development, gender dimensions of maritime security, and coastal community engagement in maritime surveillance. Rear Admiral Udofia expressed his gratitude to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla for his unwavering support and assured that the insights gained from the workshop would contribute to tackling maritime security challenges in Nigeria.

    In closing, he thanked the staff of IMION for their efforts in organizing the workshop and wished all participants safe travels back to their respective units. He reiterated the importance of continued collaboration to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime resources and promote sustainable development.

    The event marked a significant step toward addressing maritime security challenges and advancing the Blue Economy in Nigeria.

    The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has successfully intercepted and handed over 30 sacks of cannabis sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    On 13 August 2024, the Base Quick Response Team, acting on credible human intelligence, located a stash of illegal hard drugs suspected to be cannabis sativa at a facility known as Tenshop, near a mosque opposite the Iyafin community. Despite extensive searches of the surrounding areas, no suspects were apprehended as they fled upon the team’s arrival.

    In accordance with the Harmonized Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention, and Prosecution (HSOP-AD&P) 2016, Lieutenant Commander BI Zoaka, the Base Operations Officer, officially handed over the drugs to Assistant Commander of Narcotics Emmanuel Ogbogoh, the Assistant Area Commander Operations and Training at the NDLEA Seme Arca Command in Badagry, on 12 September 2024.

    This operation is part of the broader Operation WATER GUARD, launched by Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan on 9 November 2023. The operation aims to curb smuggling and other criminal activities within the Western Naval Command Area of Operation (AOO), ensuring regional security and economic stability. The continued efforts of the Nigerian Navy FOB Badagry align with the Chief of Naval Staff’s Strategic Directive 2023-6, which focuses on maintaining a secure maritime environment in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.

    The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its commitment to maritime security and the enforcement of laws to safeguard the region’s economic interests and public safety.

    Petroleum Tanker Drivers Plans Massive Protest in Lagos Over Chairman Removal, Incumbent Bad Leadership

    The Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association PTD, an affiliate of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Lagos State Branch has threatened to go on massive protest over what they termed the illegal removal of Comrade Olabisi Akinlolu as the substantive Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of the Association after spending just 6 months after being duly elected, TMnews can report.

    The officials of the Association who spoke with Journalists on Tuesday accused Comrade Saheed Adigun, his Deputy for masterminding his removal in a manner which they termed as illegal and contrary to the provision of the constitution guiding the Association.

    According to a member of the Association who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “our erstwhile Lagos State Branch Chairman was forcefully removed from office by his Deputy, Comrade Saheed Adigun who plotted his removal and planted himself as the present Chairman.”

    Speaking further, he said, “On May 5, 2022, a Delegate Conference of PTD, Lagos Zonal Council was held at Manhattan Hall, Jericho, Ibadan, Oyo State, with the theme “Continuity of Excellence”, where Comrade Olabisi Akinlolu was re-elected as the Zonal Chairman of PTD- Lagos Council, to serve for another 4 years, because of his competence and transparency.

    “After 6 months in office, Comrade Saheed Adigun and some individuals who are against his transparent leadership style removed him from office illegally to start a parallel executive leadership, supported by Comrade Dr. Chief Otunba Salmon Akanni Oladiti JP, a member of the PTD Trustees, who influenced others with money to ensure Saheed Adigun surreptitiously becomes the Lagos State Chairman.” He said.

    Adding that Chief Otunba Salmon Akanni Oladiti who was once the National Chairman of the Association, did not handover some Bank accounts having huge sums of money belonging to the Association after his tenure. Since the inception of Comrade Saheed Adigun, as the Chairman of the PTD-Lagos Council, the Association has been experiencing hardships, setbacks, corruption, diversion of Association funds to the private bank account of Otunba Salmon Akanni and manifesting the worst kind of leadership to the Association.

    “What we are asking for is that our Chairman, Comrade Olabisi Akinlolu be returned to office to complete his 4 years term. All members of PTD lagos Council are tired of the bad leadership of Comrade Saheed Adigun, we want our Chairman returned to office for a better and effective leadership.” He lamented.

    Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, has highlighted the urgent need to bolster maritime security and effectively utilize the country’s marine resources. Ogalla made this call in a key address at the launch of Nigeria’s first Maritime Security and Blue Economy workshop, emphasizing that protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and optimizing its blue economy are crucial for national stability and economic growth.

    The workshop, held at the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION), Nigerian Navy Ship QUORRA Auditorium Naval Base, Harbour Road Apapa is organized in collaboration with Sequential Development Solutions.

    In his address, Vice Admiral Ogalla who was represented by Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Naval Doctrine Command, Rear Admiral Habilla Zakaria highlighted the strategic importance of Nigeria’s maritime environment, which is rich in resources such as oil, gas, and fisheries. He emphasized the vast potential for economic growth through the Blue Economy, which includes diversifying the economy, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and creating job opportunities.

    “The realization of the Blue Economy’s full potential depends significantly on maritime security,” Ogalla said. He pointed out that challenges like piracy, illegal fishing, and crude oil theft threaten the stability and development of the maritime sector. Ensuring maritime security is therefore crucial for maximizing the benefits of the Blue Economy and the overall well-being of Nigerians.

    The workshop aims to bring together experts from the maritime industry, government, academia, and other stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for maritime challenges. This includes leveraging modern technologies to combat maritime crimes and promoting sustainable economic activities. Ogalla praised the IMION for organizing the event, noting its role in addressing maritime security issues and contributing to the Blue Economy’s success.

    On his part, The Director General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia Rtd highlighted the workshop’s purpose and scope, underscoring its alignment with the government’s focus on enhancing maritime capabilities and promoting sustainable economic growth through the blue economy.

    Established on June 1, 2024, IMION aims to enhance maritime research, bridge knowledge gaps, and foster partnerships both within Nigeria and internationally. Udofia outlined the workshop’s focus on maritime security and the Blue Economy, emphasizing that these elements are essential for sustainable development.

    Rear Admiral Udofia praised Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, for his pivotal role in founding the institute and supporting its mission. The workshop will cover various aspects of maritime security and the blue economy, including infrastructure, coastal community safety, and surveillance. Participants will engage in practical exercises and discussions to enhance their understanding and capability to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s maritime development.

    “The security of our maritime domain is essential for unlocking the full potential of our blue economy,” Udofia stated. “A peaceful and secure maritime environment is vital for the sustainable development of our marine resources. This workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support and protect these resources, fostering economic prosperity and sustainable development.”

    The workshop will generate comprehensive reports and recommendations for relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies. By addressing maritime security challenges and exploring opportunities within the blue economy, IMION and its partners hope to drive significant advancements in Nigeria’s maritime sector, benefiting both national and international stakeholders.
