    Army Dismantles Illegal Bunkering Site In Lagos Arrests Six Suspects

    Troops of 65 Battalion under the leadership of the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel S Adeojo, have dismantled a suspected illegal bunkering site at the Orile General Area of Lagos State during a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation.

    According to an official press release issued by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army, on July 28, 2026. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops raided the site and arrested six suspected oil bunkerers. The operation also led to the recovery of four trucks, one pumping machine, and assorted pipes and drums allegedly used for illegal bunkering activities.

    The suspects and recovered items have been handed over to the officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Lagos State Command for further necessary action.

    The General Officer Commanding 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola, commended the troops for the successful operation and charged them to sustain the offensive against economic sabotage and other criminal activities within the 81 Division Area of Responsibility

    Beitbridge Mission Ignites Nigeria Benin, Cameroon Push for Faster African Trade

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has once again strengthened its commitment to coordinated border management, trade facilitation and regional economic integration following a high-level benchmarking mission to the Beitbridge Border Post between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

    The mission, which brought together the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, alongside Mr Fongod Nuvaga, Director General of Cameroon Customs,

    Benin Customs, Mrs Lonto Ndlovu Acting
    Commissioner Customs and Excise in the
    Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), as well as Alhaji Saleh Ahmadu, Chairman Bergmans Security Consultant and Supplies Limited was organised with the support of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) as part of ongoing efforts to deepen intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

    Speaking during the session and adoption of the Joint Communiqué on Monday, 27 July 2026, CGC Adeniyi described the mission as a strategic opportunity for African customs administrations to move beyond discussions on border reform and embrace practical implementation of modern border management systems. He noted that the lessons from Beitbridge and Chirundu Border Posts, both in Zimbabwe, reinforced the importance of coordinated institutional frameworks, digital integration and collaborative leadership in transforming Africa’s trade corridors.

    “Beitbridge has demonstrated that border modernisation is not merely about infrastructure development. The most important lesson for us is that sustainable reform depends on coordinated institutions, clear accountability, digital interoperability and professional human capital. We are leaving here with a renewed commitment to translate these lessons into practical solutions that will strengthen trade facilitation, security and economic growth across our region,” Adeniyi said.

    The five-day mission featured technical sessions, facility tour and executive briefing by various border agencies in Zimbabwe. The benchmarking technical team comprising the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Cameroon Customs Administration, Benin Customs Administration, Bergmans Security Consultant and Supplies Limited and Bsmart Technologies briefed the Customs Chiefs on the Beitbridge Modernisation and Concession Model, including its financing structure, operational framework, revenue management systems and coordinated border governance architecture.

    Participants also undertook extensive tours of the freight terminal, cargo processing facilities, scanning operations, traffic segmentation systems and integrated ICT infrastructure designed to support seamless border operations. The engagements provided participants with firsthand insights into how technology, institutional coordination and performance management have transformed one of Africa’s busiest border crossings into a model for efficient trade facilitation.

    According to the Joint Communiqué signed by the participating customs administrations, the mission was conceived within the broader continental effort to facilitate trade across West Africa and between West and Central Africa. The document identified the Sèmè-Kraké corridor linking Nigeria and Benin Republic, as well as the Mfum-Ekok corridor connecting Nigeria and Cameroon, as strategic routes that stand to benefit significantly from the implementation of coordinated border management and One-Stop Border Post arrangements.

    Also speaking during the ceremony, Director-General of the Cameroon Customs Administration, Fongod Nuvaga, emphasised the importance of collective action in improving trade corridors across the continent. He observed that customs administrations must work together to remove procedural bottlenecks that hinder legitimate trade while maintaining effective border controls. According to him, stronger regional cooperation will enable African countries to fully harness the opportunities created by the AfCFTA and accelerate economic integration across the continent.

    Similarly, Director-General of the Benin Customs Administration, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou, noted that the lessons from Beitbridge offer practical pathways for improving border efficiency within West Africa. He stressed that harmonised procedures, coordinated risk management systems and stronger institutional partnerships will be critical to achieving seamless trade movement across regional corridors. He added that sustained collaboration among neighbouring customs administrations remains essential for delivering measurable improvements in trade facilitation and revenue assurance.

    Earlier, Director for Trade Facilitation and Investment Promotion at Afreximbank, Dr Gainmore Zanamwe, highlighted the significance of the benchmarking exercise as part of the Bank’s broader strategy to support trade-enabling infrastructure across Africa. He explained that the objective was not simply to showcase physical infrastructure but to expose participating administrations to the governance structures, operational models and institutional reforms that underpin the success of modern border posts. “Infrastructure is important, but what truly drives performance is an operating model built on accountability, coordination, technology and measurable service standards. Those are the lessons we hope will be replicated across strategic corridors on the continent,” he said.

    The mission concluded with the signing of a Joint Communiqué committing Nigeria, Cameroon and Benin to establish a Trilateral Strategic Steering Committee to drive implementation of the recommendations arising from the visit. The three customs administrations also pledged to pursue harmonised procedures, digital interoperability, coordinated risk management systems and sustained investment in personnel development.

    The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, at the Authority’s Headquarters, Marina, Lagos.

    Rear Admiral Mustapha said the visit was aimed at formally introducing himself and further consolidating the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Navy and the NPA, with a shared focus on strengthening port security and improving trade facilitation across Nigeria’s maritime domain. He conveyed the appreciation of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, for the Authority’s strategic role in supporting national economic growth and advancing the Blue Economy, describing the NPA as a critical stakeholder in maritime security and efficient port operations.

    The FOC commended the Managing Director for his innovative leadership in driving port efficiency and reform, and highlighted the Nigerian Navy’s sustained efforts to enhance maritime security through the Falcon Eye Maritime Surveillance System, the Regional Maritime Awareness Capability (RMAC) and the deployment to curb maritime crimes and ensure safer shipping lanes.He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to deeper collaboration with the NPA in support of secure and seamless trade facilitation.

    In his response, Dr Dantsoho appreciated the enduring partnership between the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigerian Navy, commending the Western Naval Command for its critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and enabling efficient port operations. He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration in strengthening port security architecture while improving trade facilitation processes to enhance competitiveness and ease of doing business. He also called for increased operational support, particularly in the Eastern Zone, and expressed optimism that deeper synergy would further advance national maritime security and economic development.

    The visit featured the presentation of souvenirs and concluded with a group photograph, reaffirming the shared commitment of both organisations to consolidating partnership for enhanced port security, improved trade facilitation and sustained national economic growth.

    NIHOTOUR Begins Hospitality Governance Overhaul With National Committee

    The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has inaugurated a National Committee on Industry Professional Bodies Recognition and Governance as part of a far-reaching reform programme aimed at strengthening professionalism, institutional governance and stakeholder collaboration across Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism industry.

    The committee was inaugurated at the Institute’s headquarters in Abuja by the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIHOTOUR, Aare Abisoye Fagade, who described the initiative as a strategic milestone in building a more credible, accountable and globally competitive hospitality sector.

    Fagade said the committee would develop a comprehensive national framework for the recognition, regulation and collaboration of professional bodies operating within the hospitality, tourism, travel and allied sectors.

    He noted that the industry is home to numerous professional associations, making it necessary to establish a unified governance framework capable of promoting transparency, professionalism, ethical conduct and institutional accountability.

    According to him, stronger institutions remain the foundation of every successful profession, stressing that the committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of laying a credible governance structure that will command national acceptance and international respect.

    The NIHOTOUR boss explained that the assignment aligns with the provisions of the NIHOTOUR Establishment Act, 2022, which empowers the Institute to regulate standards, promote professional development and strengthen institutional capacity within Nigeria’s tourism ecosystem.

    He said the committee has been given three months to submit practical recommendations that will shape the future governance architecture of professional bodies in the sector.

    Its terms of reference include developing objective criteria for recognising professional associations, recommending governance and accountability standards, proposing ethical guidelines, strengthening collaboration with government institutions and eliminating areas of institutional overlap.

    The committee is also expected to recommend strategies for improving coordination among industry organisations while preserving their individual mandates and enhancing investor confidence and global competitiveness.

    Fagade emphasised that the initiative is not designed to restrict the activities of legitimate professional organisations but to establish standards that promote excellence, integrity and public trust across the industry.

    He urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, professionalism and patriotism, adding that their recommendations must be inclusive, legally sound and capable of delivering lasting institutional reforms.

    Chairman of the committee, Professor Wasiu A. Babalola, Esq., thanked the NIHOTOUR management for the confidence reposed in the members and pledged that the assignment would be carried out with integrity, objectivity and transparency.

    Babalola said the committee would engage extensively with practitioners, regulators, investors, academics and professional associations to ensure its recommendations reflect global best practices while addressing Nigeria’s unique industry realities.

    The committee comprises respected professionals representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including Dr. Muhammad Nasir Yusuf, Suleiman A. Ahmad, Dr. Elizabeth Babagale, Mr. Aniyikaye Adebayo Samuel, Mr. Bashir Abiodun Bello, Ms. Ajibola Olubiyi and Mrs. Uloma Egbuona, bringing together broad regional representation and industry expertise.

    The inauguration forms part of NIHOTOUR’s broader reform agenda to deepen professional standards, improve institutional governance, enhance quality assurance and position Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism industry as a stronger driver of economic diversification, investment, employment generation and sustainable national development under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

    Evidence Counters VDM Claims As Leaked Files Exonerate AIG Jimoh In VGC Land Dispute

    Allegations by social media infleuncer, Martins Vincent Otse alias VeryDarkBlackman (VDM) that Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh framed businessman Hammeed Tajudeen Akanbi for double murders in order to takeover a land in Victora Garden City (VGC) area,are untrue, concocted and baseless.

    Documents obtained at the weekend showed that policemen deployed to the said property where on lawful enforcement of law and order following series of petitions to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Lagos State Police Commissioner written by the Developers (names withheld) who are the owners of the properties.

    In January they sent petitions to the Lagos Police Commissioner (Jimoh headed that office at the time) requesting police protection and also alleging threats to their life and criminal breach of trust, fraudulent extortion, among others.

    In the petitions written through their lawyers, and dated December 5, 2025 (to the IGP), and January 20, 2026 (to Lagos Police Commissioner), the complainants stated that they hold Contract of Sale and Lagos State Government Consent establishing their ownership of the property, following a 2022 settlement with the land’s original owners.

    The petitions stated that Akanbi, who first presented himself to the complainants in 2019 as a land consultant, snatched from them over 40 plots across Orchid Road, Alpha Beach Road and Agungi between 2019 and 2020 through false representations. They further alleged he introduced to them along Chevron Drive parcel of land as his family’s land, a claim contradicted by the subsequent settlement with actual owners of the land.

    Complainants solicitors stated that after they paid Akanbi ₦1.5 billion in settlement over his demands, he allegedly mobilised thugs who invaded the site, grievously wounded workers and disrupted construction.

    Photographs annexed to the petitions showed spray-painted inscriptions on the property’s fence, including “THIS LAND IS NOT FOR SALE, BEWARE OF 419” and a claim that the land belonged to the Ojomu royal family.

    It was on this basis, the petitions were sent to the police requesting protection for them and their property “while they clean/remove the inscription illegally inscribed on the property “. The petitioners asked that Akanbi and his associates be restrained from further interference.

    Jimoh, who’s the AIG in charge of Zone 2 Lagos, has faced allegations of false and unsubstantiated corruption from VeryDarkMan, over the investigation into the killings of Sheriff Ishola in April 2023 and one Demola Akinloye in August 2024 in Ajiran, Eti-Osa, both cases in which Akanbi was named a principal suspect who allegedly sponsored the two murders. Jimoh has said the two suspects arrested in the case gave statements implicating Akanbi, who was later declared wanted and returned to Nigeria by INTERPOL.

    Otse, who’s been at the forefront of agitations to exonerate Akanbi despite the murder cases pending before a court of competent jurisdiction, had released a voice note purportedly discussions between Akanbi and one Akin Fakorede where they were discussing the VGC land.

    In the voice conversation, one of the speakers could be heard saying in Yoruba that it was Jimoh that sent police to the land…
    While VDM ran to town with the voice note and allegations that Jimoh was dragging the land and that was why he framed Akanbi, details contained in the petitions proved contrary.

    According to sources, the complainants have repeatedly commended Jimoh for his professionalism, telling everyone who cared to listen that the senior officer never demanded nor received anything from them.

    “They said it several times that they didn’t know Jimoh when the petition was submitted and he acted on it without demanding anything. The AIG who was CP then, did not collect money nor land. He doesn’t own a land there. The property belong to the petitioners,and Akanbi sent his thugs there because he wanted to grab the land at all cost but thankfully, the policemen were deployed and they prevented his evil plans,” said the source.

    According to the source, accusations against Jimoh were merely blackmail to weaken him from carrying out his statutory duties.He probably refused to collect bribe from Akanbi and his cohorts, that’s why they have gone to social media to malign him.

    The AIG had earlier responded to the corruption allegation against him, that he is not corrupt and didn’t take any money or property from anyone. He urged anyone with evidence to take same to the court or hand them over to Akanbi’s lawyers to form part of their defence in the ongoing trial.

    He also stated that no amount of pressure or blackmail would stop him from doing what was right, adding that from the investigations conducted in the case, Akanbi had case to answer and the Police have evidences that can stand the test of trial against Hamed Tajudeen AKANBI and his cohorts in the matter.

    On the allegations online that he bungled the investigation into the death of Mohbad, police sources described the purveyors as ignorant and unintelligent.

    Their reason is because Mohbad died in 2023 and the probe into his death started almost immediately until the issue went before a Lagos Coroner and the case later moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Abuja. They urged anyone interested to find out about this at FCID, Abuja.

    “Throughout this period, Jimoh was not serving at the Lagos State Police Command nor the FCID. He never investigated the case of Mohbad and had no links to it. He took over as CP Lagos on 18th February,2025 long after Mohbad’s case has gone to court. Even at that, on one or two occasions some group of persons protested to the Lagos command, he personally addressed and attended to them assuring them of Justice in the matter.He even gave them water and soft drinks and explained to them that police actions terminate once a matter has been charged to court.

    “So, I don’t understand why they are linking him to Mohbad’s case if not for mischief,” said the source.

    Boat Safety Gets Major Boost as NIWA, NSIB Strengthen Partnership

    The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, says it will deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, to improve safety and reduce boat accidents across the country’s inland waterways.

    The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, *Malam Umar Yusuf Girei*, gave the assurance on Tuesday when he received the Director General of NSIB, *Captain Alex Sabundu Badeh Jnr*, on a courtesy visit at the NIWA Headquarters in Lokoja, Kogi State.

    Girei said the partnership would focus on collaboration, information sharing and joint operations to tackle the persistent challenge of boat mishaps.

    According to him, effective cooperation among relevant stakeholders is critical to ensuring safer navigation and the protection of lives and property on Nigeria’s waterways.

    “NIWA is dedicated to strengthening partnerships with sister agencies to improve safety standards and enforce regulations for safer water transportation in Nigeria,” he stated.

    The Acting MD further assured the NSIB delegation of NIWA’s readiness to provide relevant information, technical expertise and operational support. This, he said, will facilitate timely investigations into marine incidents and help develop preventive measures to reduce future occurrences.

    Earlier, the NSIB Director General, Captain Badeh, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between both agencies and exploring areas of collaboration in accident investigation, data sharing and safety standards.
