  • APAPA COMMAND; NCS Collects N489b, Surpasses 2023 Figure By Over Hundred Percent

APAPA COMMAND; NCS Collects N489b, Surpasses 2023 Figure By Over Hundred Percent

… As Comptroller Jaiyeoba Harps on Benefits of Compliance

The Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has collected N489,614,095,022.15 as total revenue for the first quarter of 2024, which is over a hundred per cent higher than the N212.5b collected same period of 2023.

Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba, commended the officers and port stakeholders for their cooperation towards the attainment of the laudable feat and called for sustained compliance by government and private sector stakeholders.

According to the press release by Abubakar Usman, Chief Superintendent of Customs
CPRO of the command “The Controller reminded them that the Apapa Command of the NCS is playing a critical role towards the realisation of the N5.7tr annual target of the NCS in 2024 and as such all hands should be on deck to achieve it.

According to him, the almost N 2 trillion target the command is expected to collect in 2024 is attainable through diligently abiding by the service books of instructions like the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCSA) 2023, government import/export prohibition lists, Common External Tariff and Federal Government approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

While thanking the officers for their punctulity, diligence, and non compromise in the discharge of their responsibilities, Jaiyeoba reminded them of the CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and Customs Management confidence vested in them.

The CAC reminded them that the present customs management has created room for multiple benefits for those who operate in compliance with the rules. He stated that the recently launched AEO is one of such benefits.

He described the command’s first quarter collection as a bold step towards the realisation of the target and reminded all port users about the importance of compliance, which, according to him, comes with multiple benefits.

Jaiyeoba said, “I want to urge all stakeholders in Apapa Port to keep supporting us in achieving an efficient system where everyone plays by the rules to achieve smoother, seamless, and faster import/export cargo clearance.

“Making honest declaration puts the declarant at a vantage position to have a credible reputation and enjoy the benefits that come with earned integrity such as fast track and possible migration to the authorised economic operator (AEO).

“Such attitude of compliance saves time and money as examination officers would find the cargo less cumbersome to process and other units of the service including sister government organisations would not need to flag such cargo for seizure or arrest of the importers/exporters. The cargo gets cleared on time, and payments for penalties after demand notices are not necessary as no DN is issued on compliant import/export.

“I will continue my weekly engagement of stakeholders at various levels to sustain the tempo of our achievements and consolidate on the gains from regular enlightenment of every member of the port community.
“As we step into the second quarter to end the first half of 2024, I am convinced we will do better in revenue collection, facilitate more trade through our port and prevent smuggling under any guise” the CAC said.

Nigerian Navy Uncovers Illegal Fuel Depot With 65,000 Litres of Automotive Gasoline Oil In Ilasun Lekki

In a press release issued on April 3, 2024, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft announced the discovery of an illegal fuel depot and the subsequent arrest of five suspects in Ilasun Lekki.

The leader of the syndicate, Mr. Ahmed Ariyo, along with four other individuals, was apprehended in a private apartment where they conducted their illicit activities.

According to Commodore Rafiu Taye Oladejo, Commander of NNS Beecroft, the discovery of the illegal fuel depot followed credible intelligence received by the naval ship regarding suspicious activities at Elegushi beach. Acting on this information, the NNS Beecroft Quick Response Team was deployed to the location, resulting in the discovery and arrest of the suspects.

The illegal fuel depot was found to contain eight storage tanks, each with a capacity of 50,000 litres, holding approximately 57,000 litres of Automotive Gasoline Oil (AGO). Additionally, a tanker carrying about 7,000 litres of AGO and a bus with 30 jerry cans, containing approximately 1,500 litres, were seized. In total, approximately 65,000 litres of AGO were discovered, valued at approximately 89 million Naira based on the current price of AGO (₦1,350).

Commodore Oladejo estimated the total capacity of the storage facility to be about 400,000 litres if all eight tanks were filled to capacity, amounting to approximately 500 million Naira. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects obtained the products through pipeline vandalism, illegal vendors at sea, and other illicit means along the coastline.

Emphasizing the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to combating oil theft and other maritime crimes, Commodore Oladejo reiterated that NNS Beecroft will continue to pursue criminals as directed by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu, Admiralty Medal. He assured law-abiding citizens of the navy’s dedication to eliminating maritime crimes in the Lagos maritime environment to facilitate socioeconomic activities.

The suspects, along with the seized products and facility, were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim, Base Information Officer at Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, provided the information in the press release.

  • Ruth Sisters’ Fellowship International Empowers 30 Widows In Anambra And Warri

Ruth Sisters’ Fellowship International Empowers 30 Widows In Anambra And Warri

Thirty widows from Onitsha and Warri in Anambra and Delta states have received seed funds to enable them start up small scale businesses and overcome the economic hardship associated with widowhood.

The women were empowered by a non-denominational organisation, Ruth Sisters’ Fellowship International (RSFI) at an event which held at the Irene Menakaya School, Onitsha last week.
The Nation reports that the empowerment was part of activities lined up to celebrate the second anniversary of RSFI Nigeria chapter.

Addressing the women, RSFI’s Rector, Prof. Ada Menakaya, who centered her message around Ruth 1:19-21, encouraged widows, particularly the young ones to empower themselves educationally for productive ventures to better their lives.

Menakaya who was represented by the group’s National Coordinator, Caroline Enarere, an evangelist, advised the widows not to make themselves vulnerable.

She said that the group had kicked off the Widows Entrepreneurship Startup Initiative to help some widows annually with small-scale businesses, stressing that 30 vulnerable widows would get
N20,000 each to start up businesses.
“Our mission is rooted in the biblical life story and spiritual journey of Ruth and Naomi.

“The Fellowship is the rebirth of gender character for a generation with a mission to let every woman understand that her being made empty; draws her back to her roots of Royalty in Jesus Christ, where she will be made whole in the actualisation of a character for generations to come,” Menakaya said.

She said further that with the growing trend of economic downtrodden and development, gender inequality impeded women’s capacity and potential to be players in their destiny,” Menakaya said.

She added that the inequalities including widowhood challenges, inability to access and control over resources, access to education and information, and equal rights and access to decision-making processes explained what women could do and could not do in a given situation.

“For women to be empowered to move from their inequalities and challenges to faith, sacrifice, and strong will, require supportive resolve to educate and empower self through the help of one another.

“Widowhood concerns are still global issues needing solutions that must be enabled for women’s advancement, and progression, to enable a better environment for women especially less privileged widows across the world.

“Widowhood emotions are thwarted, affecting their gender balancing, emotions, and character, and this requires psychological and emotional therapy that could lead to a better world for the vulnerable and helpless widows,” she said.

A former Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih urged the widows not to look miserable because they have lost their husbands, but to comport themselves to live a positive life of emulation.

“Occupy yourselves with productive ventures, don’t be vulnerable to the society, you can do it with strong will and prayers,” the President General of Nkata Ndi Iyom, Nigeria, she said.

Anenih also counselled them on Igbo culture and tradition, adding that teaching of Igbo language to the children has become imperative for the language not to go into extinction.

Mrs Mary Chude, Leader of the newly inaugurated Onitsha chapter assured that she would do her best to move the body forward in the area with prayers and members’ support.

The widows and a widower received rice, gari and onions. There was also the cutting of Sister to Sister Love cake at the event.

The prominent personalities at the event are Rev. Dr Jason Chukwukelu of Achievers’ Gospel Church Intl, Onitsha, Pastor P. O. Amaukwu, Mrs Christy Chukwukelu and Rev. Mrs Kings Afimoni, amongst others offered prayers.

They claim to represent Islam, but the truth is far from that.”
