No casualties were reported, and the seized goods were safely conveyed to the Government Warehouse at Customs House in Abeokuta.

The statement emphasized the commitment of the Command, led by the Acting Customs Area Controller Ahmadu Shuaibu, to prioritize the safety of the host communities and denounced the indiscriminate use of firearms. It reiterated the commitment to operating within the confines of the law and adhering to rules of engagement.

Highlighting provisions within the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCSA) 2023, the statement underscored penalties, including a five-million-naira fine and imprisonment for five years, for obstructing, molesting, or assaulting officers on lawful duty. Additionally, Section 226 of the NCSA grants Customs operatives the authority to conduct patrols freely, relevant to their anti-smuggling operations in Ogun State.

The statement stands as an official response from the Nigeria Customs Service regarding the incident and reaffirms the commitment to maintaining lawfulness and ensuring the safety of communities in the region.

  • TMG Urges Fair IPAC Election for Democratic Progress

TMG Urges Fair IPAC Election for Democratic Progress

The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has underscored the crucial nature of the forthcoming Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) election, slated for Monday, December 18th, 2023, emphasizing its pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic process. As the umbrella organization representing all registered political parties in the country, IPAC stands as a significant platform dedicated to fostering a free, fair, credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful electoral environment in Nigeria.

Expressing concerns over potential manipulations in the election process, TMG has raised alarm bells, cautioning against the infiltration of the council’s leadership by certain political elements aiming to wield control over the institution. TMG highlighted the damaging impact of such attempts, drawing parallels to previous instances where various independent bodies, including electoral and judicial entities, have faced challenges to their autonomy and integrity.

The Group lamented the trend of implanting loyalists within critical institutions, asserting that these actions compromise democratic principles and erode public trust. Noting the IPAC election as a battleground for vested interests seeking to stifle opposition, TMG emphasized the importance of the council’s impartiality in fostering political party accountability and internal democracy.

TMG further raised concerns regarding candidates with pending criminal cases vying for leadership positions within IPAC, expressing dismay at their candidacy. The Group warned against the consequences of electing individuals with integrity deficits, citing potential damage to the council’s reputation.

In a bid to uphold transparency and credibility, TMG urged IPAC members to conscientiously exercise their votes, ensuring individuals with questionable backgrounds are not given leadership roles. The call for a transparent electoral process aligns with TMG’s vision of fostering confidence among Nigerians in IPAC’s ability to champion political party reforms.

Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), Chairman of Transition Morning Group (TMG) and Executive Director of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), endorsed the statement, urging a fair and credible IPAC election to instill hope for comprehensive political party reform in Nigeria.

The December 18th IPAC election stands as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, and TMG’s advocacy for fairness and integrity within the process underscores the necessity for robust and transparent political party structures in the country.

  • COALITION TO SUPREME COURT: Your Judgement On Kanu Well Researched, Commendable

COALITION TO SUPREME COURT: Your Judgement On Kanu Well Researched, Commendable

The Supreme Court judgement of Friday, December 15 2023, refusing an application by the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for his release, is a verdict that is well-researched, well-articulated, and solidly rooted in both law and logic.

This was the collective submission of the Coalition for Peace in Nigeria (COPIN), and The Iconoclast Media Platform, in reaction to the decision of the apex court ordering Kanu to face charges of terrorism preferred against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

While commending the apex court for refusing to be swayed by orchestrated sentiments, the coalition said the decision of the highest court in the land voiding and setting aside the October 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal ordering the release of Kanu is right and proper.

In a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator of COPIN, Pharm Emeka Akwuobi, and National Secretary of Iconoclast, Dr. Mayago Mayago, the coalition said quashing terrorism charges the separatist leader – as earlier done by the appellate court – was not in the best interest of justice.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, but written by Justice Garba Lawal, the Supreme Court had held, among others, that no law was cited in the motion seeking Kanu’s release on mere unlawful abduction from Kenya.

According to the Court, the remedy for such action is for the detained agitator to file a Civil matter against such act instead of removing the powers of courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.

In the statement dated Sunday, December 17, the group said: “As a patriotic, and non-profit coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs), we commend the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria declining to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from lawful custody.

“We equally thank the apex court for not pandering to sentiments, that are being orchestrated by sympathisers of IPOB and its leader.

“We call on well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy all over the world to appreciate the verdict that we consider to be well-researched, well-articulated, and solidly rooted in both law and logic.

“It is our considered view that the Court of Appeal may not have served the cause of justice, when it quashed the charges of terrorism against the separatist agitator.

“By last Friday’s decision, the detainee now has a golden opportunity to defend himself before the trial court, to prove his innocence, or otherwise.

“For us at COPIN, and ICONOCLAST, we maintain that Nigeria is bigger than an individual, or group. We, therefore, urge institutions of government to refuse to be cowed by interests that are at variance with the rule of law, and common good.

“In the same vein, we implore political, and religious leaders, as well as traditional rulers to rise above sectional interest and parochial sentiments, and put Nigeria first in whatever they do, or say.

“As citizens, leaders, politicians, civil society groups, and other critical stakeholders, the minimum that is expected of us is to support the military, intelligence, security and other law enforcement agencies, to deliver on their collective mandate of sustaining the corporate existence of Nigeria.
