Choji Grandchildren Spearheads Lekki One Million Trees Initiative To Immortalize Late Da Vincent Gwott Choji For Community Environmental Enhancement

Representing Da Vincent Gwott Choji family, the grandson Damen Choji, a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability, is leading the Lekki Million Trees initiative, a community-driven effort aimed at fostering a culture of tree planting in the local environment. Expressing his belief in the transformative power of this initiative, Damen emphasizes the importance of every child planting at least one tree in their surroundings.

Beyond the visual appeal of a greener landscape, Damen highlights the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, emphasizing its positive impact on biodiversity and the creation of a more resourceful habitat for both humans and animals. He asserts, “I believe that trees can help with mental health in society.”

Damen goes on to underscore the critical role trees play in mitigating climate change and global warming, citing their contribution to various aspects of life. He envisions a future where the widespread planting of trees in Nigeria will make the country more resourceful, beautiful, and renowned on a global scale.

The core principle of the initiative is to encourage tree planting in every possible location. The Choji family, in particular, is actively promoting this cause, recognizing the indispensable role trees play in sustaining human life by providing essential oxygen. Damen states, “Without trees, I’m not sure we will be able to cope.”

The Choji family’s commitment goes beyond personal benefit, as they strive to raise awareness and engage the community in the importance of tree planting for current and future generations. Their initiative aligns with the broader goal of making society cognizant of the crucial role trees play, not only for individual well-being but for the betterment of the entire community.

On his part, Dr. Augustine Onwumere, Chairman of PWAN Group, the world’s first real estate network marketing firm, emphasized the vital role of trees in maintaining a healthy environment.

Dr. Onwumere highlighted the interconnectedness of trees with human well-being, illustrating how the natural oxygen emitted by trees rejuvenates cells and contributes to a fresher appearance. Underlining the essence of tree planting, he asserted, “Tree is life and life is tree. Everything we eat is a plant, but when we remove trees, we forget to plant them back, disrupting the natural ecosystem.”

Expressing personal commitment, Dr. Onwumere shared his love for planting trees, citing examples from his home in VGC. He stressed the importance of integrating trees into both residential and office spaces, enhancing aesthetics and contributing to the well-being of inhabitants.

Also speaking, Alhaji Sulyman Bello, President of the Lekki Estate Resident & Stakeholders Association (LERSA), expanded on the initiative’s broader mission. He emphasized that the endeavour goes beyond merely planting trees; it is about safeguarding the environment and, by extension, preserving the existence of Lekki Peninsula.

Bello noted collaborations with partners, including Lagos State Government, Eti-Osa Local Government, Ibeju Lekki Local Government, and Lekki Concession Company, demonstrating a commitment to the long-term maintenance of the planted trees. The initiative, starting with a goal of one million trees, aims to cover Eti-Osa LCDA, Victoria Island LCDA, Ibeju Lekki Local Government, and Lekki LCDA.

Dr. Joseph Daniel Onoje, Director-General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, applauded the initiative’s alignment with their goal of creating green spaces for positive human well-being. Stressing the invaluable benefits of trees on physiological and emotional health, Dr. Onoje highlighted that trees contribute to healthier lives, reducing healthcare costs.

The collaborative effort between LERSA, the late Vincent Choji family, and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation resonates with the shared vision of greening the Lekki environment.

Dr. Onoje concluded by encouraging everyone to participate in planting trees, emphasizing the immeasurable value nature provides to humanity through the free gift of natural oxygen.

In essence, Damen Choji’s Lekki Million Trees initiative stands as a beacon for community-driven environmental stewardship, inspiring individuals and families to actively contribute to the cultivation of a greener and more sustainable future.

Also speaking at the event, Prince David Omaghomi, a distinguished Trustee of the Eco-Restoration Foundation and a member of Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), has passionately endorsed the flag-off of the 1 million trees initiative along the Lekki-Epe corridor. This initiative serves as a continuation of ongoing efforts to green the peninsula and fortify it against the looming threat of coastal erosion.

Addressing the critical issue of oceanification, Prince David emphasized the vulnerability of Lekki, Victoria Island, and Ikoyi, all situated below sea level. He warned of the impending risk, predicting that without intervention, these areas could be lost to the ocean within a couple of decades.

Prince David elucidated on the strategic role of tree planting in mitigating oceanification and ensuring the preservation of the economic security of the corridor. He stated, “Conserving the environment helps to conserve the future and your investment. This initiative is about wealth preservation, ensuring the safety of future generations and safeguarding multi-billion dollar investments in real estate, industrialization, and the general economic life on Lagos Island.”

Urging the active involvement of Lagosians, Prince David called for collective action in planting trees, suggesting various avenues for contribution.

He encouraged adopting a stretch, engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects, and even celebrating events like birthdays by requesting trees instead of traditional gifts.

Highlighting the progress made so far, Prince David shared, “With Eco-Restoration Foundation, LERSA, and LASPAC, we have already planted 50% of the trees on the corridor from the Admiralty Tollgate. The target is a million trees over the next few years, and this move is set to scale up efforts, extending from the current location to Epe.”

The collaborative endeavor between the Eco-Restoration Foundation, LERSA, and LASPAC underscores the commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming not only for a greener corridor but also the preservation of the economic vitality of this crucial region in Lagos.

NN Denies Allegations Of Wrongdoing In Sponsored Publication

The Naval Headquarters has strongly refuted recent claims made by Peoples Gazette, known for its history of character assassination and libel, against Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla. The publication alleges involvement in multi-billion naira oil bunkering and contract-splitting fraud.

The Nigerian Navy dismisses these allegations as baseless and unfounded. It clarifies that procedural requirements in the arrest, detention, and release of vessels involved in illegal activities are strictly followed. Contrary to the report, no vessels implicated in crude oil theft have been released prematurely.

Additionally, the CNS does not have the authority to award or oversee oil bunkering contracts, as this falls under the purview of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). The Navy asserts that all contracts awarded adhere to due process in line with national laws.

The Navy attributes these accusations to a coordinated effort by disgruntled elements seeking to undermine its recent successes in combating crude oil theft and illegal activities in the maritime domain. Operation Delta Sanity, launched by the Nigerian Navy, has intensified efforts to address these issues and has evidently disrupted criminal operations, leading to desperate attempts at tarnishing the Navy’s reputation.

Rear Admiral AO Ayo-Vaughan, the Director of Information, emphasizes the Navy’s commitment to ensuring the smooth operation of legitimate businesses in the maritime sector. Despite attempts at distraction, the Navy remains resolute in its mission to confront criminal activities that hinder Nigeria’s economic progress.

The public is urged to disregard the malicious publication from Peoples Gazette, deemed as a fabrication fueled by shallow imagination and unpatriotic motives. Rear Admiral Ayo-Vaughan requests widespread dissemination of this clarification to counter the false narrative presented in the sponsored article.

  • Jersey Court Orders Seizure Of $8.9 Million Linked To Arms Procurement Corruption In Nigeria

Jersey Court Orders Seizure Of $8.9 Million Linked To Arms Procurement Corruption In Nigeria

In a significant development for asset recovery, Transparency International Defence & Security UK and CISLAC applaud the Royal Court in Jersey’s ruling to seize $8.9 million misappropriated by corrupt Nigerian officials. The funds, originally allocated for equipping Nigeria’s military in the fight against Boko Haram, were diverted in 2014.

The Royal Court determined that the funds, obscured through foreign bank accounts and shell companies, ultimately benefited family members of Nigeria’s former ruling party. Nigeria, with a ‘E’ rating in Transparency International Defence & Security’s Government Defence Integrity Index, faces a very high risk of corruption in its defense sector.

Josie Stewart, Head of Transparency International Defence & Security, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, emphasizing the need for greater transparency in international arms deals. She urged Jersey authorities to ensure the funds’ open and accountable return to Nigeria, highlighting the risks of corruption within the defense sector.

Auwal Ibrahim Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC/Transparency International Nigeria, welcomed the decision and called for judicious use of repatriated funds to benefit common Nigerians.

Rafsanjani urged the Nigerian Government to enhance transparency, accountability, and independent auditing in the defense and security sector. Additionally, he called on legislative committees and civil society to provide external oversight through tracking and scrutiny of budgetary allocation, appropriation, implementation, and procurement activities.

The successful return of these assets not only serves justice but also emphasizes the critical need for transparency in the global arms trade.

He highlighted that the command’s 2023 performance was commendable, achieving 89% of the set target. As a result of their hard work, the Customs Management has allocated a 27% share of the national target for Tin-Can Island Port Command in 2024.

Nnadi outlined the breakdown of the new target, stating that it equates to a monthly goal of N94.23 billion, with a weekly target of N21.7 billion. This translates to a daily target of N4.23 billion, a formidable task that the Comptroller believes is achievable with the dedication of the officers and support from stakeholders.

During the press conference, Nnadi declared 2024 as the “Year of Stakeholders,” urging them not to be intimidated by the ambitious revenue goal. He emphasized the importance of correct declarations and compliance, calling for collaboration with the national trade facilitation committee to conduct a time release study in Tin-Can during February.

ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY REPORT: A Call For Honour And Improved Welfare

In the midst of multifaceted discussions on security challenges, the focal point of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day is to honour fallen heroes, veterans, and the men on the force, urging a collective effort for improved welfare conditions for the Nigerian army.

During an interview, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, the Flag Officer Command of Naval Training Command Apapa, highlighted the importance of the Remembrance Day, emphasizing its role in sustaining the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice for the defense of the nation.

In response to questions regarding the challenges faced by the men in the force, Nwatu acknowledged the multifaceted nature of security concerns, pointing out the emphasis on celebration and remembrance day as a broader initiative under the Ministry of Defence. He commended the ongoing efforts to sustain the armed forces’ capabilities, especially in terms of equipment and welfare.

Responding to concerns about the treatment of civilians by some members of the armed forces, Nwatu acknowledged the need for better civil-military relations. Nwatu expressed optimism that as the security situation normalizes, there may be opportunities to encourage a closer connection between civilians and the military.

He stressed the importance of verifying and authenticating information before disclosing the status of service personnel to their families.

Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu called for continued support for the armed forces from the public and emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to address challenges and foster a stronger connection between the military and civilians. As the nation commemorates Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the call for improved welfare and understanding of the sacrifices made by the armed forces remains at the forefront of the national conversation.

  • FG/NIWA: Lawyer lauds S’Court’s judgment, Accuses Oba Elegushi of Illegal Land Acquisition

FG/NIWA: Lawyer lauds S’Court’s judgment, Accuses Oba Elegushi of Illegal Land Acquisition

A Lagos based lawyer, Olajide Ajana has lauded the Supreme Court’s judgment on reaffirming the authority of the Federal Government (FG) through the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to control activities in NIWA.

Ajana in a press conference said the interpretation of the judgment simply means that lands in the waterways does not belong to Oba Elegushi as he doesn’t have the title and that the State government cannot issue any titled document as the rightful person to issue title in the waterways  areas is the Federal government through its agency NIWA.

Recall that the Federal Government and Lagos State government have been in a legal battle on who has regulatory rights over the nation’s waterways. But recently, the Supreme court ruled in favour of FG and its Inland Waterways regulatory agency, NIWA.

Justice Okoro, in a judgment delivered in Abuja, validated an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court in suit number FHC/CS/543/2012, which pronounced NIWA as the authentic authority over Nigerian inland waterways and advised Lagos State Government  and its agencies and any other state in the country to stay away from regulatory activities on Nigeria Inland Waterways.

Reacting in the press briefing, the lawyer explained that the Supreme court has transferred the control of activities on the nation’s inland waterways including levying, licensing operators in the sector that it belongs exclusively to the Federal government and its agencies.

“The existing law gives exclusive control of activities in the nation’s inland waterways to the Federal government through its agencies. NIWA is the only agency of the federal government with power to exclusively manage, direct and control all activities of the navigable waterways, according to Sections 8 and 9 of NIWA Act,” he explained.

The lawyer recalled that the appeal was filed by the agency of the government and it was prosecuted by the present Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

“The supreme court agrees with Fagbemi’s argument that NIWA is the only agency that is saddled with the responsibility to levy, impose, and share the rate of utilitilisation of inland waterways authority,” he recalled.

Ajana noted that the implication of the Supreme court judgment is that all those titles that were issued by Lagos State government to a Nigerian monarch, Oba Saheed Elegushi and other people are null and void.

“The supreme court’s decision in this case has rendered null and void all the Lagos state titles issued to Oba Elegushi over inland waterways.”

The lawyer also accused Oba Elegushi of using his political might to acquire lands with fake titles through his dredging companies;  Elcathay Dredging Company Nigeria Limited and Blue Bay Estate and Marina.

Alleging illegal acquisition of land by Oba Elegushi, Ajana made available to our correspondent, Police Investigation report from the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police FCID, Abuja which complaints were initiated by Prince Toluwaleke Megba and Lucky Megba Ojonla Ltd and stated in Paragraph 4, 27 that the document and letter from Lagos State Government tasked on Environment, absolving themselves from the demolition indicates that Oba Saheed Ademola Elegunshi Royal Family are responsible  for the demolition of the properties of the complainants.

Over the illegal land acquisition accusations, Ajana recalled that investigation was ongoing by the police where Oba Elegushi along with five other suspects; Mr Wael Almansour, Mr Karim Almansour, Al-Mansour Contracting and Dev. Ltd, Chiedu Nweke, Oba Saheed Elegushi and Chief Kehinde Hassan Elegushi all accused of malicious damage, violation of court order, threat to life and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

The report confirmed and concluded that a prima-facle case of conspiracy, malicious damage and conduct likely to cause breach of peace has been established against the suspects.

Ajana said that Oba Elegushi Also that Oba Elegunshi approached the court to have his name removed but the complainants have approached the Court of Appeal to restore his name so that he can be prosecuted.

“We want to enlighten the general public and investors that Oba Saheed Elegushi does not have Title to the lands he is selling along the Nigerian Inland Waterways. Lagos State government also cannot issue title, as the rightful person to issue title as the rightful person to issue title in the waterways areas is the Federal government through its agency NIWA.

“So Lagos State government has been excluded completely from issuing Certificate of Occupancy ( C of O) or any titled document in respect of lands that are in the waterways,” he said.
