  • Customs Made N36.95 Million In Adamawa/Taraba Operations Through Seizures of 43,000 Litres of PMS

Customs Made N36.95 Million In Adamawa/Taraba Operations Through Seizures of 43,000 Litres of PMS

In a recent press briefing held at Customs House Yola, the Headquarters of Adamawa/Taraba Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Command highlighted significant successes in combating smuggling and illegal trade activities along its borderlines. Led by the Area Controller, the briefing detailed recent operations and seizures aimed at upholding the NCS mandate of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and suppression of smuggling.

The Command disclosed that in collaboration with other security agencies, it has intensified efforts to enhance border management across its operational areas. Notably, on June 29, 2024, operatives acting on shared intelligence intercepted 85 drums (85×25L) of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) along the bank of river Benue at Ribaddo-Farkumo axis. The smugglers, upon sighting the officers, fled, abandoning the illicitly obtained PMS destined for illegal export to Cameroon.

Further operations on July 6, 2024, resulted in the seizure of 795 jerry cans (795×25L) of PMS concealed in a bush path at Sahuda, along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Additionally, a Carina E vehicle fitted with a hidden compartment carrying PMS was intercepted along Girei-Wuro Boki axis. These actions underscore the Command’s commitment to curbing illicit activities that undermine national economic interests.

During the period under review, the Command recorded a total of 17 seizure cases, including PMS, a used tricycle, a motorcycle, and two vehicles, with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) amounting to N36,952,342.50. Despite the recent repeal of PMS subsidy in Nigeria, smuggling activities persist due to high demand and inflated prices in neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Niger, and Benin Republic, creating a lucrative market for illicit exports.

In response to the resilience of fuel smuggling cartels, the Adamawa/Taraba Area Command emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen operational strategies and intelligence gathering capabilities. The Command reiterated its commitment to reducing smuggling activities to zero in the region, supported by the unwavering leadership of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, the management of NCS, and collaborative efforts with various Customs units and security agencies.

The Area Controller appealed to the public for support in reporting suspicious activities, stressing the collective responsibility in combating smuggling for the nation’s economic growth and security. The press was urged to continue enlightening the populace on the detrimental effects of smuggling. The briefing concluded with a call for sustained synergy between the media and NCS in the ongoing anti-smuggling crusade.

The Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in its mission to safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests and uphold national security through effective border management and enforcement actions.

  • Grace Nation Church Denies Fraud Extortion Allegations Against It By Former Member

Grace Nation Church Denies Fraud Extortion Allegations Against It By Former Member

The Grace Nation Church International, a prophetic, healing and deliverance ministry based in Lagos has asked the public to discountenance and totally ignore the contents of a petition now being circulated by a former member, alleging that he was defrauded by the church recently.

The former member, Mr Michael Omolayo Ibukun who was also a member of the church’s protocol team, has recently been in the news, alleging that two cars were forcibly taken from him and sold to unknown persons.

In his petition to the Nigeria Police, Ibukun also alleged that the church blatantly refused to pay the N50million it owed him for the diesel fuel his company, Blessed Energy Resources Limited supplied it a couple of months ago.

Also included in the petition was a request that the cars taken from him by the church be recovered while the monies owed him from the diesel sale be paid in full.

This, according to sources, would instigate a thorough police inquest that climaxed with the invitation of Dr Chris Okafor, the church’s founder and senior pastor by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade Mustapha to his office recently.

However, Ibukun’s hopes of making an appreciable headway in the case was dashed after the police found no grounds to press charges or indict the church for any wrongdoing.

But Ibukun’s recent action in which he has engaged the social media to continue his cars and money recovery battle has lately forced a reaction from the church

In a lengthy statement released on Wednesday, the church cleared itself of any wrong doing, declaring in no uncertain terms that it had no case to answer.

“In his petition to the Nigeria Police, Mr Michael Omolayo Ibukun, a one-time member and worker in this church alleged that the Grace Nation Church forcibly took from him two cars and sold them to unknown persons. He also claimed that he was being owed monies to the tune of N50million for the diesel fuel to the church sometime ago,” the statement signed by Mr Henry Okoduwa, the church’s spokesman said.

“There cannot be anything farther from the truth. For the records, the said cars were willingly given as an offering to God by Ibukun who, joyous and in an expansive mood for the blessings he received from God, decided to drop the car keys on the altar after giving a testimony during one of the church’s services that was broadcast live about three years ago.

“Ibukun had particularly been enamoured by the fact that God broke the jinx of no male children in his lineage when his wife conceived and bore him a son following the prayers of the Dr Chris Okafor, the church’s head pastor.

“That is why we find it particularly strange that the same person who willingly gave his cars with the original documents attached would turn around a few years later to demand that they be given back.

“The church is also scandalised to hear him allege that he was being owed N50million for the diesel fuel he supplied it when in actual fact he was paid all the monies owed him for the few times he transacted business with the church.

“It therefore does not need high intelligence for anyone to fault Ibukun’s debt story because it’s illogical for him to have recently gone to Dr Chris Okafor, the church’s patriarch to make a request of a N10million loan when all he needed to have done was demand that part of what was being owed be paid!

“He had asked for a loan which he said he wanted to re-inject into his business, and despite being unable to offer the assistance because of the enormous resources that had been sunk into the rebuilding and expansion project the church undertook in 2023, God’s servant, Dr Okafor still sought for a way out by referring him to his bank.

“That the bank could not help at the end was not because the man of God did not want to. Mr Ibukun failed to convince the bank that he would be able to repay the loan. They said he was not credit worthy.

“The church authorities also faulted Ibukun in the area of offerings and tithes giving, saying that it does not compel people to give.

“Thankfully, we run live telecast of all our programmes/services and our mantra is to always allow people give what they can afford at any given time. The church does not monetise it’s services or the blessings derived therefrom, nor does it compel people to give what they are not led to give.

“Since we abhor the practice of making altar calls in which members or visitors are asked to drop their cars and landed properties, it is sheer contradiction to imagine that Ibukun was asked to.

“Ibukun who is presently on the run for defrauding two of the church’s members of the combined sum of N11million recently do not appear to us as someone who is qualified to cast aspersions at an organisation as ours that is Godly, honest and law abiding.

“More than anything else, Ibukun has proved, with his latest fraudulent activities, that he does not deserve the sympathy he has desperately sought from the public with his tissue of lies and deliberate falsehood.

“This is why it will be in the interest of those who might be tempted to be hoodwinked by his story and join him in his current campaign of calumny against the church to desist,” the statement further said.

  • INTER-AGENCY COLLABORATION: Navy Seizes, Hands Over Suspected Cannabis Sativa To NDLEA

INTER-AGENCY COLLABORATION: Navy Seizes, Hands Over Suspected Cannabis Sativa To NDLEA

In a significant operation demonstrating their ongoing commitment to maritime security, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has intercepted and handed over bags of products suspected to be cannabis sativa to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Special Area Command.

The interception occurred on May 31, 2024, at approximately 0620 hours, during a routine patrol along the waterways. Acting on credible intelligence, the naval personnel moved swiftly and intercepted the suspected drugs at the beachside near the Falcon Eye sensor, at Daddi, Barrier Island. The drugs, believed to have been smuggled from Ghana, were transported via a wooden boat and subsequently beach-landed.

On June 20, 2024, Lieutenant Commander BI Zoaka, the Base Operations Officer of FOB Badagry, officially handed over four seized sacks to Assistant Commander Narcotics Ogbogoh Emmanuel, all suspected to be cannabis sativa. This action aligns with the Harmonized Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention, and Prosecution (HSOP-AD&P) of 2016.

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, has emphasized the mission to maintain a professionally competent naval force capable of defending Nigeria’s maritime interests. Under his leadership, the Nigerian Navy has intensified efforts to secure maritime environments and curb illegal activities. Supporting this mission, Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, launched Operation WATER GUARD on November 9, 2023. This operation aims to deny smugglers and other criminal elements freedom of action within the Badagry General Area, thus ensuring regional security and economic stability.

The sustained efforts of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base Badagry reflect the CNS Strategic Directive 2023-6, which seeks to secure the maritime environment of Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea. This recent interception marks the second significant operation since the current administration of FOB Badagry assumed office in February 2024.

Captain Bitebobo Augustus Amakiri, Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base Badagry, commended the personnel for their vigilance and dedication, reiterating the navy’s commitment to national security and economic prosperity through sustained maritime security operations.
