Female Leaders Advocate Gender Parity at UBA Business Series

As part of activities marking the 2025 International Women’s Month, Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, hosted the quarterly edition of its Business Series event, where leading female professionals from diverse industries shared insights on overcoming systemic challenges, driving change, and redefining success.

Held at the Tony Elumelu Amphitheatre, UBA House, the hybrid event reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to promoting gender parity, creating opportunities, and empowering women to build lasting legacies in their careers and businesses.

The panel featured accomplished women, including the Founder and CEO of Shule Direct, Faraja Kotta Nyalandu; Former Attorney General and Board Chairman of Africa Prudential Plc, Chief (Mrs) Eniola Fadayomi; award-winning actor and entrepreneur, Nancy Isime; and the Managing Director of BOI Investment and Trust Company Limited, Mrs Flora Fabyan.

Each panelist shared personal experiences navigating their careers, tackling gender bias, and achieving financial and professional independence, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic transformation.

Faraja Kotta Nyalandu highlighted the ripple effect of women’s empowerment on families and communities. “Empowering a woman transforms her household, her family’s health, and the wider society. My call today is for everyone to create opportunities that enable women to unlock their potential through education and learning,” she stated.

Chief Eniola Fadayomi reflected on her journey in the legal and public sectors, noting the challenges women face in leadership. “As an Attorney General, every day was a battle. Women often have to prove themselves twice as much as men. When you’re collaborative, they say you’re weak; when you’re assertive, they call you aggressive. Women should capitalize on their unique strengths to excel,” she said.

Nancy Isime emphasized the importance of financial independence for women. “Financial stability influences life choices, including partnerships. Budgeting, investing wisely, and continuous learning are key steps towards achieving financial independence,” she advised.

Chief Flora Fabyan spoke on balancing professional and personal responsibilities. “Women are naturally trained to juggle multiple roles. Managing work and home requires being present and making decisions that benefit both spheres,” she noted.

UBA’s Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, commended the bank’s dedication to gender equality. “At UBA, we recognize the vital role women play in shaping economies, businesses, and families. While progress has been made, there is still much work to do, and UBA remains committed to accelerating that progress,” she said.

  • Naval Operatives Through Multiple Raids Across Niger Delta Seizes More Than 129,000 Liters Of Stolen Crude Oil

Naval Operatives Through Multiple Raids Across Niger Delta Seizes More Than 129,000 Liters Of Stolen Crude Oil

The Nigerian Navy has announced significant achievements in its fight against crude oil theft and other maritime crimes through Operation Delta Sanity II, which was launched on December 30, 2024. During February 2025, naval personnel conducted multiple raids across the South South and Southwest regions, seizing more than 129,000 liters of stolen crude oil, intercepting smuggled fuel, and dismantling numerous illegal refinery sites.

In a statement released by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information, the Navy detailed the interception of wooden and fiber boats laden with stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ondo States. Several major busts included the seizure of two wooden boats on February 1 and 5, both carrying drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) allegedly en route to the Republic of Cameroon, as well as the discovery and deactivation of multiple illicit refining sites in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Ondo States.

One of the largest operations took place on February 19 in Egbema West, Rivers State, where the Navy uncovered numerous illegal refinery installations, including approximately 70 ovens, 40 reservoirs, and 50 dug-out pits holding an estimated 50,000 liters of stolen crude oil and 5,000 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). In a separate raid on February 12, personnel dismantled another illegal refinery site with over 30,000 liters of stolen crude oil and multiple refining ovens in Bayelsa State’s Ekeremor Local Government Area.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, praised the dedication of naval personnel involved in Operation Delta Sanity II and reiterated the Navy’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain. He noted that these actions have contributed to the recent rise in the country’s daily crude oil output, which the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) reports at around 1.75 million barrels per day.

Operation Delta Sanity II is part of the Navy’s broader strategy to curb oil theft, safeguard critical infrastructure, and maintain stability in the nation’s waterways. The Navy urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that collaboration between security forces and local communities is essential for sustaining the fight against maritime crimes.

  • CISLAC Calls Senator Natasha’s Suspension Illegal, Unconstitutional, and Undemocratic

CISLAC Calls Senator Natasha’s Suspension Illegal, Unconstitutional, and Undemocratic

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate’s decision to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, calling it an unconstitutional move that undermines democracy and legislative independence.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), CISLAC condemned the Senate’s action, stating that “it directly violates the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and sets a dangerous precedent for legislative governance.”

CISLAC argued that the suspension of an elected senator contradicts Sections 68 and 69 of the 1999 Constitution, which clearly outline the lawful processes for a legislator to lose their seat. Section 68(1) & (2) states that a legislator’s seat can only be declared vacant under specific circumstances such as resignation, defection, conviction, or recall by constituents through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The statement reads: “Section 69 stipulates that the recall process is the only constitutional means for removing an elected legislator, making the Senate’s decision legally baseless. By suspending Senator Natasha, CISLAC noted that the Senate has effectively denied the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District their right to representation, an action that constitutes an abuse of power.”

The civil society group also highlighted past judicial rulings that have consistently declared legislative suspensions unlawful. It referenced key cases such as Hon. Dino Melaye v House of Representatives (2009), where the Federal High Court ruled that legislative chambers lack the authority to suspend elected members.

“In Ali Ndume v Senate President & Ors (2018), the Court of Appeal nullified the senator’s suspension, reinforcing the principle that lawmakers cannot be arbitrarily removed by their peers. Similarly, House of Assembly v Hon. Danna (2003) established that only the judiciary or the electorate have the power to remove an elected official. CISLAC accused the Senate of disregarding these precedents and eroding legislative independence by silencing dissenting voices,” Rafsanjani said.

The group also questioned the impartiality of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in handling the matter. It pointed out that Senator Natasha’s suspension stems from her raising sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio.

“CISLAC argued that allowing the Senate’s Ethics Committee—seen as influenced by leadership—to dismiss the allegations without a fair and neutral review violates Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to a fair hearing. The principle of Nemo Judex in Causa Sua (no one should be a judge in their own case) has been completely disregarded in this matter,” CISLAC stated, calling it a misuse of legislative power.

The organization also warned that suspending lawmakers for expressing dissent weakens the oversight function of the National Assembly. It stressed that Section 39 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, including for lawmakers. Parliamentary immunity exists to protect legislators from persecution over statements made in the course of their duties.

“A legislature where members fear retribution for questioning leadership cannot function as a true democracy. CISLAC warned that the move sets a dangerous precedent where Senate leadership can silence opposition through suspensions, effectively turning the National Assembly into a tool of intimidation.”

The organization also expressed concern over the implications of the suspension on gender inclusion in politics, stating that the decision discourages women from participating in governance. “This move sends a message that female lawmakers can be silenced and intimidated at will, reversing decades of progress toward gender inclusion,” CISLAC noted. It further criticized the Ethics Committee for failing to uphold integrity by dismissing the sexual harassment claims instead of conducting a transparent investigation.

CISLAC expressed concern over the global reputational damage caused by the Senate’s decision, emphasizing that “this action has legitimized attacks on freedom of expression, encouraged intimidation, and institutionalized sexual harassment in public spaces.” The organization warned that Nigeria risks being perceived as a country where democratic institutions are weaponized against dissenting voices, undermining its credibility in the international community.

CISLAC demanded the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha and urged the Senate to retract its decision and uphold democratic principles and the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

  • Idiroko Customs Hands Over Seized Illicit Drugs To NDLEA, Records N279.5 Million In Seizures

Idiroko Customs Hands Over Seized Illicit Drugs To NDLEA, Records N279.5 Million In Seizures

The Ogun 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating smuggling and ensuring national security, as it handed over a large cache of seized illicit drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command. The handover took place during a media briefing held in Abeokuta on Thursday, March 6, 2025, where the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, also presented the Command’s February 2025 scorecard.

During the briefing, Comptroller Shuaibu emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in tackling smuggling and fostering compliance with trade laws. He noted that the Command has intensified its enforcement efforts, leading to the interception of various prohibited items, including smuggled foreign rice, second-hand clothing, used tires, and large quantities of illicit drugs.

In line with the policy thrust of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, we have deepened our collaboration with key stakeholders, including traditional institutions and security agencies. This approach enhances decision-making, improves communication, and strengthens national security, Shuaibu stated.

Highlighting the seizures made within the past month, the Customs boss disclosed that the Command intercepted:

    – 2,145 bags of smuggled foreign rice (equivalent to over four trailer loads)
    – 612 bales of second-hand clothing
    – 843 pieces of used tires
    – 6,625 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) (which was auctioned due to its combustible nature)
    – 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing 3,103.3 kg
    – 88 cartons of codeine cough syrup

The total duty paid value (DPV) of the seized items amounted to N279,595,038.00, while the Command also generated N9,694,072 in revenue from baggage assessment and auction sales of PMS.

Comptroller Shuaibu further emphasized the Command’s unwavering stance against smuggling and drug trafficking, stressing that criminals attempting to evade security measures would continue to face resistance.

We are resolute in our fight against economic saboteurs. Our intelligence network and operational mechanisms are robust, ensuring that illegal trade and trafficking will not thrive in our jurisdiction, he stated.

In a bid to enhance cross-border trade and security, the Command recently hosted a high-level stakeholder engagement on March 3, 2025. The meeting brought together Customs officers from Ogun 1 and Benin, security agencies, and clearing agents to discuss challenges affecting trade at the Benin Republic-Idiroko border corridor.

While handing over the seized drugs to the NDLEA, Shuaibu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ridding the country of illicit substances that threaten public health and safety. He commended the media, security agencies, and host communities for their continued support in the fight against smuggling.

The Comptroller concluded by expressing gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for his leadership, as well as to traditional leaders, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their collaboration in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders.

  • Nigeria, Benin Republic Renew Commitments To Legitimate Trans-border Trade On Idiroko Route

Nigeria, Benin Republic Renew Commitments To Legitimate Trans-border Trade On Idiroko Route

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Idiroko Command and its counterpart from the Benin Republic have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade relations and combating trans-border smuggling along the Idiroko route.

At a strategic meeting held on Monday in Idiroko, Ogun State, officials from both nations pledged to implement practical solutions to address challenges hindering smooth trade between the two countries. The meeting was led by Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, the Area Commander of Ogun 1 Area Command, and Soglonou Jean-Paul, the Customs Area Controller of Benin Republic’s Igolo Command, alongside a six-man delegation.

Speaking after the closed-door session, Comptroller Shuaibu emphasized the importance of Nigeria-Benin trade relations, noting that both countries share a rich history of economic cooperation. He highlighted that the meeting provided an opportunity to identify barriers, engage with stakeholders—including representatives from the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA)—and develop actionable strategies to enhance legitimate trade.

“The economic relationship between Nigeria and Benin is vital not only to our bilateral ties but to the entire region. This session allowed us to hear firsthand from stakeholders, share insights, and engage in frank discussions that will lead to tangible outcomes,” Shuaibu stated.

He reiterated the Nigeria Customs Service’s guiding principles of consultation, collaboration, synergy, and transformation, as outlined by the Comptroller General of Customs. The focus, he said, remains on facilitating seamless and legitimate trade while enforcing government fiscal policies against smuggling activities.

Shuaibu further emphasized that the customs agencies of both countries operate under a shared global framework and that the cooperation between them is crucial in addressing trade-related challenges. He assured that despite the recent exit of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, trade in the region remains unaffected due to agreements under the African Free Trade Association (AFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The renewed commitment by both customs administrations signals a continued effort to foster a secure and structured trade environment along the Nigeria-Benin border.
