In a recent media briefing led by the Acting Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, DC Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu, the spotlight was cast on a significant interception shedding light on the ongoing battle against smuggling activities.
Ejibunu highlighted the pivotal role of ingenious concealment in aiding smuggling operations, enabling illicit goods to elude detection by authorities. Emphasizing the illegality and grave socio-economic implications of smuggling, he reiterated the FOU Zone ‘A’s unwavering commitment to eradicating such nefarious activities.
The Acting Controller underscored the unit’s persistent efforts to bolster detection methods, leveraging intelligence-driven operations. Resulting from these strategic measures, the unit intercepted a Toyota Highlander vehicle. Its ingenious concealment of suspected bags of foreign parboiled rice at Iju-Ojuore, Ogun State, brought into focus the effectiveness of these anti-smuggling operations.
Ejibunu emphasized that these seizures exemplify the unit’s dedication to safeguarding the nation’s economic interests. The confiscated items in November included 5,459 bags of 50kg foreign rice (equivalent to 9 trailer loads), 18,100 liters of premium motor spirit, 376 bales of used clothes, 1,926 cartons of frozen poultry products, 337 pieces of used compressors, 3 X 40 ft containers containing 3,838 pieces of used tyres, 13 used vehicles (Tokunbo), and 396 cartons of frozen fish.
The total duty paid value of these seized goods amounted to N872,575,250. Additionally, 11 suspects were apprehended in connection with some of these illicit activities. Furthermore, revenue amounting to N71,254,984.71 was generated through meticulous checks and the issuance of demand notices on consignments that evaded appropriate Customs duties.
Ejibunu stressed the challenges posed by smuggling operations employing ingenious concealment methods. He urged collective citizen support in providing timely and useful information crucial for combatting smuggling activities effectively.
This interception stands as a testament to the relentless efforts of the FOU Zone ‘A’ Customs in preserving the nation’s economic integrity and preventing the influx of illicit goods into domestic markets.
